This is the best book yet by a terrific author. Murakami takes his stories to the metaphysical level but in a way that is facinating to any reader. This is a must read from my shelf.

Catchy title and catchy plot, yet this book really fell short of my expecations. Still there were parts that really intrigued me, particulary the beginning and the end. Yet, inbetween, I felt a bit disjointed and bored by certain chapters and characters. But of course I wanted to know what happened to Wendy and the chapters written from her perspective (and the chapters that did not identify a charcter but were simply titled Haeden, NY) were disturbing. I felt there was too much emphasis placed on Alice's parents-their background and friends-as if they were part of a larger more important mystery. I understand the author used it as a basis for developing Alice's personality; the way she was raised being the foundation for the way she thinks, but it didn't work for me. What did work for me was the small town way of life and how the inhabitants of Haeden were unable to see the damage created and maintained in their own community. Reporter Stacy Flynn is able to flush some of it out and tell it like it is. And Alice? I still don't get her.
