The only word to describe this book is beautiful...and maybe sad. Heart wrenchingly beautiful. This is the story of Mia and her painful choice. Stay here on earth with her boyfriend Adam or go with the rest of her deceased family. Mia is forced to watch as people come and go asking her stay but she must make the ultimate choice, to stay or not to stay. Go with her family or stay with the love of her life. Experience Mia's pain as she must make a choice. Make your choice along with her.
** spoiler alert ** I wish I could give this book a two and a half because that is right in the middle and that's about how this book went for me. The beginning was so boring and I had to force myself to keep reading. I am glad that I finished it thought because now I know what the author was going for. However, I think there is a more interesting way to get there. I get how Nicholas is supposed to be a "genius" but still. The way he overcame the Spiders would have been better if the Spiders had been given more intelligence. Anyone can outsmart people who are that stupid.

This is what I call a "comfort read". Perfect for a chilly rainy day, curled up under your favorite quilt with a hot cup of tea or cocoa at your side.

A journey of identity and tracing roots takes us through Africa, New Orleans and New York amidst in an environment of music and cultural insights. There were teasing references to some of the jazz greats and it was a nice musical journey from Africa to New Orleans. While the story starts with 2 best friends and a woman they both loved in 18th century Africa, the journeys their descendants take introduce us to the budding jazz movement and beyond. Unfolding the branches of the family trees through the generations and unraveling how they each descended from the 3 original Africans in the midst of all the music and tribal magic kept me turning the pages. I would have liked more details rather than passing references to Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory, King Oliver, and Fate Marable, but that would be my only criticism of this book.

Oh, this book is everything I hoped it would be: beautiful, lyrical, and intensely painful. In fact, I couldn't finish it -- I need a break from it and then I'll return.

Overall a good read. No big understandings, no drama, no TSTL heroine, no fiery conflicts etc... Just two people who find love at a pivotal time in their lives. A marriage of convenience trope with likable characters.

It was a good story and even though it was quite a departure from the type of book I usually read I am glad that I read it. I had a little trouble for a chapter or two, reading of the cruelty that White Fang endured at the hand of man. I know these things happen but just don't care to read about them. I was thankful for Jack London's ability to let the reader know what was going on with out including every minute detail. It was a good story and can understand why London's works are considered worthy of attaining the honor of classic.
This essay examines the study of African-American culture through an analysis of methods previously employed in the field. A focus is placed on the cultural heterogeneity of African slaves and manner in which this circumstance affected the formation of African-American institutions. Mintz and Price present a multitude of opportunities for further research but do not thoroughly expand upon many in this small volume.

Carrying me from an old paradigm of forgiveness to a whole new thing. Important book.
