Not only is a ton of the plot superfluous, which has been a problem in the last few books, but the anger is so overwhelming. I understand he's 15, he's got a lot of shit to deal with, but the quick-to-surface rage gets so frustrating, and is the main reason I refused to reread it until four years later. Harry and Ron live in a self-obsessed, rageful existence where the smallest slight turns into a huge row, and Hermione and Ginny are usually the only ones with enough sense to tell people what's really going on. If only there were more of Hermione and Ginny. This book was truly the turning point of the series, and, after the climax of Voldemort's return in Goblet of Fire, set up the war to come in the next three books. We get to finally experience the true world of Harry instead of an isolated school where the three "heroes" live with no true consequences for their constant rule-breaking. Now their mistakes cause injury and, in some cases, cost lives.

It was okay but not as interesting as the other books of the series
Well, I wouldn't describe Chain of Fools as an atypical Donald Strachey mystery, but it is an atypical mystery novel, I think, with the standard intra-family assassination plot. Still, it beats Strachey's Folly in plot and as addictive to read as the others.
A classic. Love it. Read it.

I read some of the other reviews and they're mixed. It's definitely one of my favorites in the series. Harry is much more frustrated and angry in this book. Gone are the days of being content riding on the train eating treats. Life sort of does that to people when it takes away your innocence. Looking at it from that angle, I can see how others might not enjoy this book as much as the others. There's a much more serious tone, but there's also, or so it seems, more subplots and more action than previous books in the series

I read the book because I liked the movie, and I loved the book even more. It's actually quite different from the movie, but the sense of humor is preserved intact. Taught me a lot about British slang, too.

This book was nearly offensive in its wanton display of greed, vanity and superficiality. It's almost embarrassing to even admit I read it, but as a follower of Sykes' Vogue pieces, I felt I owed her a bit of literary loyalty. Big mistake. This book, sadly, confirms all those horror stories you hear about "Park Avenue Princesses," and doesn't even have the decency to laugh at itself at any point. Sykes is a clever wordsmith, but the meat of this book leaves much to be desired....like actual content. Waste your time elsewhere.

I thought this was a really good book & it really lends itself to a book group discussion.
