There's Nora, complaining that Patch isn't as committed to their relationship as she is, asking what he was doing outside Marcie's house, accusing him of never having loved her... And there's Patch, wondering if he'll be cast down to Hell - literally. Just saying.

I read a number of DH Lawrence's novels years ago & reveled in their wisdom & beauty. Recently, I saw a film which depicted the failed attempt to ban the novel in Britain in the 1960s. The film was fascinating with a fictional, embedded love story of 2 of the jurors. Of course I was inspired to re-read the novel. I am savoring every word & page. It was also of great interest to read biographical material & info on the struggle Lawrence underwent in order to get his last novel published. Have completed re-reading/savoring the novel today. I even had the opportunity to read several favorite passages aloud to a friend. Having been very young when I first read & adored the masterpiece, I find that I have reacted to it just as strongly but with a very different perspective. He still speaks to me in a very personal way. Lawrence is at once lyrical, socially conscious, dogmatic & free-thinking if that is possible. Romantic/erotic love relationships & nature lifts humans above the destructive forces of social convention, capitalism & intellectual elitism. The beauty & wisdom of this brilliant piece of literature is transcendent.

I love it when you can read a whole book in a day and this is definitely one of those books. Scarcely more than a 100 pages, this is a comparatively economical and breezy read for Hugo- albeit, loaded with the usual social commentary and metaphysical roller-coaster. The narrator is imprisoned and awaiting execution for an unspecified time and we follow him through a series of conversations, both with himself and others, until his ultimate and unavoidable end. Hugo describes both the physical and psychological world of the narrator in specific and visceral detail, sucking you into his mind and creating a compassion for this seemingly distant and un-relatable man, finally underscoring the author's favorite theme- that we, as a race, have more in common than we think and can only best serve ourselves and one another with compassion.

I didn't like the writing style, however, I see how this style could be a good lecture. I appreciate the significance of reading a dying man's last thoughts and it does cause reflection upon the words one might say in his place. Still, the ideas were far from novel, although good reminders, the writing poor, and, as a whole, the book seemed to lack climatic inspiration. I do sympathize with the family and see value in putting last thought into words for loved ones.

Interesting biography of Michael, the younger brother of Tsar Nicholas II, who was named to succeed Nicholas after his abdication. Of course, with the tumult in Russia, Michael met the same fate as his brother's family. Much detail in this book - the first third or so is the love story between Michael and Natasha. Although well written and a fascinating time in history, I felt it somewhat tedious and bogged down in too much detail.
One drawback to Veiled Deception is it hits the ground running and leaves the reader in the dark. It would be best to read the first book to understand the storyline and the relationship between the characters, or you will be half way through Veiled Deception before the fog will begin to clear. Ms.Romine has a solid writing voice but Veiled Deception left me feeling lost and wanting. I would recommend if you are interested in the Trust Me series that you start from the beginning. I might like this even better than The Goose Girl. Enna as protagonist is energetic and confused, both of which make it compelling. I've been very big on books with strong friendships lately--or maybe always and I've just become conscious of it--and the best part of Enna Burning is the amazing connection that Enna and Isi have. On top of that, though, too, is the bigger group friendship between Enna, Isi, Finn, and Razo. It's interesting that Geric isn't quite included in that, having never been one of the animal keepers like the others. And I adore Finn. The scene in which he says "All I've ever wanted is to be near you," when he thinks Enna is sleeping melts my sappy little heart.

Re-read for the local IT book club, read it last in April 2007, my note says. It holds up very well in a second reading and I still count it as a favorite. Partly that's because of the North Carolina setting and the author's beautiful descriptions of the countryside, the plant and animal life. I find myself in strong disagreement with Inman's spiritual principles, which seem to be a kind of animism or paganism, but still respecting the spirituality he strives for. Perhaps the horrors of war, and the inhumanity of mankind disillusioned him so much that traditional religious belief was no longer accessible to him.
I really liked this book. I found myself turning page after page. I liked how they set up the chapters in a way in which they took two unrelated topics and found similarities. I found the parenting chapter very interesting.
