Great book!...and a real lesson for me in true forgiveness and God's love that these missionaries had for the natives of Ecuador. I was constantly in awe of their spiritual maturity and unwavering focus on God's will for their lives. I also greatly appreciated the double epilogue written by the author following up on the story both in the soon after and the years after and her wonderful candidness about both their success and their struggles.

At first glance this appears to be little more than a cheesy, yet chaste, romance novel. However with Dame Daphne Du Maurier what you see is never all there is to get. I strongly disliked this book for at least the first hundred and fifty pages (and it's only two hundred and fifty pages long). I loved 'Rebecca', 'My Cousin Rachel', 'The King's General' and 'Mary Anne'. 'Frenchman's Creek' however seemed to be a completely different animal when compared to the other Du Maurier novels I'd read. Then I realized that the description of the heroine, Dona St. Columb's, husband might bear some resemblance to Du Maurier's real life husband and at that point the whole novel took on a different shape in my mind. I think that Du Maurier was writing about her own feelings of being a wife and mother and the sacrifice that comes with those identities and how she sometimes wished she could escape her life and her responsibilities. When examined in that context it seemed like Du Maurier was writing herself out of the doldrums of her own life, in essence giving herself a fantasy of escape and adventure that could never ever be real. So, while I disliked much of this pure fantasy-romance, and don't think that it's her best work, upon closer examination I can understand what may have inspired Daphne Du Maurier to write this story and for that I appreciate it.

I enjoyed this book.. I have not read many biographies, but many of my friends were reading this book, which attracted me.. I really did enjoy the book.. It was an easy read, that told more than "Stan the Man", it told the history that made the "the Man". Wonderful book.

Really good book. Basically about a boy named born in a girl's body, I thought the characters handled themselves suprisingly realistically for a piece of fiction. Plus the writer really captured the confusion of gender roles and how you are supposed to act. Great read.

I really enjoyed reading this, and it has been on my list for a long time now. I think it's accurate in the way some girls think, esp. maybe White girls, no offense meant by that. I just mean that the event of feeling excited about a menstrual cycle escapes me, lol. I don't remember feeling excited or anything, it was just something that happened. My friends and I never discussed it, it was never a huge deal. Anyway, I liked the innocence of this book but I disliked the very accurate catty behavior of the girls. Great book, but the religious struggle seemed out of place for some reason. It was very distracting.
