Second time around ! JUst as good as I remembered it . Hope to read the whole set again
Meh. There wasn't really a plot to the story. I mean, after the Killing Dance there has been a lot of sex in the Anita Blake series but they were still interesting, with twists, long stories, full of characters, fighting, shooting... this story was just dumb. The only reason it even got an OK from me was because i haven't read an Anita Blake novel in so long that I was just happy to get my hands on another one. I hope Danse Macabre is better.

The Hawley family is "Discontent". Ethan Hawley is working as a grocery clerk in the store he previously owned. The store now belongs to Marullo, an Italian immigrant who tries to teach Ethan what makes a successful businessman. Even Mr. Baker, the banker, has advice for Ethan: he tries to teach him how to be a good investor. It seems that everyone has an opinion on how Ethan Hawley can bring respect back to his family name. His wife is restless and doesn't like the fact that they are poor and living in a town where they were once respected. Ethan's son wants to go on television and get rich quick, his adolescent daughter is too secretive for his liking. Steinbeck's protagonist, Ethan Allen Hawley, is a moral individual who has always done the right thing. This novel is set in New Baytown, a fictitious town near Long Island, a town that operates within a realm of corruption. Yet things have operated that way for so long that no one remembers that it is corrupt anymore. Ethan's family feels that he is too ethical for his own good. He has to choose between his current morals and adapting the definition of his morality. Steinbeck captures a nation that is growing economically but bankrupt morally. Where this novel differs from other fall from grace novels is that the central character observes himself as a third party and slides down the slippery slope knowing full well the consequences. Steinbeck offers redemption in the form or Marullo, on being deported he gives the grocery store to Ethan Hawley. This happens just when Ethan is about to rob the bank. A short novel worthy of praise addresses moral questions that really make you stop and think; the dialogue is brilliant. The characters are clever and witty, but at times I found the plotwas very slow.
Was hoping for more, after reading "The Secret Life of Bees," but was disappointed.

Daphne is the "weird" girl in Jessica's class that no one wants to talk to or have anything to do with. Jessica is assigned to be Daphne’s partner for a book contest at their school. After awhile, they find that they have things in common. Jessica and Daphne even spend time together outside of school, and Daphne reveals a secret to Jessica that she may not be able to keep to herself. Never judge a book by its cover!!! Jessica and the other classmates never got to know Daphne, yet they picked on her. It took an assigned partnership with Daphne for Jessica to see how good of a person Daphne really was. It was a good thing they got to be partners because Jessica made herself a new friend.

I seem to be in the minority as opposed to other reviewers. I liked Nicky Charles's other books, even with their grammatical errors, and I was looking forward to reading Bryan's story, but this just fell flat for me. I didn't care for Cassie, at all. She was annoying. She's a werewolf but didn't find out until recently. And yeah she was inducted into the life rather abruptly, but come on! Its not like she can change anything now can she? Suck it up and move on. Get to know your true self. If my true nature had been hidden from me for my entire life, not to mention being forcibly drugged, I would be pissed at the ones who kept it from me, not the ones trying to help me! The term "spoiled little rich girl" fit her perfectly. Bryan was ok but he was wasted on Cassie. And the backstory with Melanie's "big secret" was just inane. Really? Really Ms Charles? C-

I really enjoy this series of mysteries, and this book is no exception. I'm not sure that it needed to be 1,000 pages long (hey, I'm an editor; I can't help it!) but the story certainly is more meaty and developed than most mysteries. I missed the focus being on Lynley and Havers (the detectives) since I usually find their stories to be as interesting as the actual mystery, but the other plotlines kept me involved until the end.
Don't bother talking to me when I had this book in my hand.
