So so good... Much better than his first book.

It was a little quirky. The story pulls you in, but is then more story based than plot based and it fizzled a little in the end.

Quick read, light read, predictable mystery/romance format. Just some nice fluff to round out a boring day.
Although the background is good and the conclusions are insightful, if you're looking for a book about the overall political situation in Somalia in the 1990s, Black Hawn Down may disappoint you. More than 90% of the book is devoted to the events of October 3rd, 1993, and most of it is told from the point of view of individual combatants. So if you're looking for a minute-by-minute story of the Battle of Mogadishu, you won't be disappointed. Black Hawk Down is one of the most solid and engaging pieces of journalism I've read in a long time.
This was a fast-paced sci-fi, dystopian, mystery story -- I loved the world the author created on-board the huge spaceship (with the exception of the "Season" aspect - ugh!). While I figured out one of the big twists early on, a couple of things surprised me at the end. There are some thought-provoking points raised about leadership, survival and individuality.

While some may consider this book a little abstract, Derrida's glosses of Genet and Hegel are filled with poetry. My advice in reading this book is to enjoy the way that Derrida deconstructs the notion of a book and not to worry too much about making sense of everything.
How can you not give 5 stars to the Necronomicon? The stars are right for the Law of Fives! Ia! Ia! Cthulhu F'htagn!

I gave up after about 20 pages or so. The conversation between the parents at the very beginning felt very staged and completely re-defined them as charaters. Apparently, they knew all along what was going on, loved Ender deeply and just allowed their children to believe that they were blind dumbos, while really subtly manipulating them the whole time. WTF, why on earth would they do that? It then moved on to Valentine's introspections and rationalisations and later to Ender's thoughts on Gruff's trial, lest the reader might actually interpret anything that happened in the first book for themselves. I lost my patience for the whole thing at that point and had no will to go on. I might pick up the series at some point in the future. Maybe. If I do, I will do so with Speaker for the Dead, which is the second book in order of being written, rather than the order of events in the series.

And so continues Miss I-Can't-Live-Without-My-Vampire-Stalker's story. Vampire stalker leaves, and she recedes into a few couple of months of depression where she doesn't think anything. The series mainly has annoying-main-character over-describing stuff, but it appears that when vampire stalker leaves her she doesn't think. Literally. She jumps off cliffs... and leaves pages worth a few months of thoughts bare. Maybe I should try kidnapping Edward Cullen...

Narrated by Ellie, this is the story of a bunch of Australian teenagers who return from a camping trip in remote country to find that Australia has been invaded by a country to the north. It is pretty much what you'd expect in the tradition of children's adventure stories, jazzed up for YA. The adults are all off-stage, there are the usual issues of young love, loyalty, personal development, unexpected heroism and discovery of skills they didn't know they had etc. There are issues about the morality of war for discussion. Ellie asks: is it ok to kill in war? How, and under what circumstances? Even though these issues are fairly predictable within this genre, the story is so well done, it's quite exciting and I enjoyed listening to it on the daily commute.
