This book starts out so good: the death of a young boy that is not as it appears. However, it devolves into a strange James Bond-esque "thriller" that defies belief. It begins in the city with Smilla investigating the death through various contacts, trying to make sense of the tragedy. This part is good, it moves along nicely. Halfway through she boards a ship, and I completely lose track of what is happening and why. For starters, it's hard for me to picture the boat. The author goes through great care describing the ship and the various rooms and distances. I've never been on a boat though, so I had no idea where she was sneaking off to, or where the various decks were, which was important to know. The plot gets confusing too. I couldn't keep track of all of the people. It was hard to remember who was her friend, who was connected to everyone else, etc. There is also a ton of violence that seemed unbelievable. At one point Smilla is looking at herself in the mirror and the number of wounds she has is preposterous, and she still walks around perfectly fine. There are also a bunch of coincidences, where the one thing she needs she just happens to find. Finally she descends to the ice, for the final part of the book, by then I'm just ready for it to end.

Enjoyed it, was an easy summer read. Some tense moments, some tender moments. If I learned anything from this book, it would have to be that we all have the power to survive if we dig deep enough.

Read chapter 4, on the innate tendencies towards sympathy (feeling with), suggestion (cognitive, though not necessarily based on cognition), imitation (bodily imitation). McDougall discusses the 4 areas that define one's particular suggestibility (brain state, information availability, suggester prestige, personal impulse to subjection), which seems like he's close to arguing for a self-contained ego (although later he does note that people fail to be socialized either through too much suggestibility or too little). But where does suggestibility end? That is, the child is suggestible because it has no information, but the adult isn't because the adult has information (an organized system of belief/knowledge), but in most cases (scientific, religious), that information has been imparted by suggestion. So, it seems that rational un-suggestibility is based on irrational prior suggestion. (Note also that, though children are more open to suggestion, in his anecdote about being frightened by a child's fear of thunder, it is the adult that is open to suggestion.)
I think this would be a great movie. I don't usually read fiction so this was a big step for me, this could have been a non-fiction since it kinda read that way.

** spoiler alert ** a very funny, mindless read
Three stars for the collection overall, but four or even five for a few of the stories within it. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for his work in the future. (There's a story of his online that's not in the collection here: [http://www.all-story.com/issues.cgi?a...]. Recommended.)

A book where a teacher teaches fractions by biting a boy in half? We're in. All of the Black Lagoon series crack my kids up.

The story of a reporter, Fowler, an American, Pyle, and the girl they both love, Phuong. All the characters seemed very self serving. I would have liked more background about what was going on with the war. I am not familiar with the Vietnam war at all. I did enjoy the way the book was written with the death at the beginning. For the most part, I felt the book was very slow and maybe a bit boring.
