This book is a life-changing experience. I'll read it again. The title is somewhat deceptive. This is not a book about happiness, this is a book about how the mind works: how much better and faster we heal than we ever anticipate; how we "cook" our memories to suit our preferences; how our psychological immune system defends our sanity; how "presentism" colors our view of the past and our expectation of the future; how we use context, frequency and recency to "disambiguate" our experiences and then also allow them to distort the facts; how carefully elaborated myths (some of them necessary for sanity or even survival) almost always take precedence in our choices over reason, facts and experience. And the language is so special, it is a real pleasure. Humorous anecdotes and witticisms drip from every page and the style and vocabulary are *alive* (if this guy ever writes a novel, it'll be an instant classic). The suspense is rekindled with subtitles that make you want to read on all the time, such as: Journey to Elsewhen The Joy of Next Dancing about Architecture New Yeller In the Blind Spot of the Mind's Eye The Meat Loaf of Oz An Embarrassment of Tomorrows The Hound of Silence The Way We Weren't Reporting Live from Tomorrow &c Here is a quote from the foreword (and the note it refers to): "[I:]f your future self is not satisfied when it arrives at the last page [of this book:], it will at least understand why you mistakenly thought it would be. *note 1*" Note 1 reads: "…If you don't care about sources …and are annoyed by books that make you flip back and forth all the time, then be assured that the only important note in the book is this one."

I don't know quite what I expected as I began this book, but it wasn't as great as I had always heard it was. I was definitely a bit disappointed. It was okay.

I first read this when I was going to graduate college. My "Angry Young Man" stage. Now that I'm an angry 38 year old, it seems even more pertinent.

Fantastic! What Joy Luck is to ABC's, this is to ABCD's. Wonderfully developed story across two generations and tons of issues addressed. Gogol is just tragic.

This book is a great book for any lover of fairy tales, whether male or female. It's not too preachy or exaggerated on the feminist issue, it seems like the author/editor really just wanted to restore some of the fairy tales that were warped by Victorian ideals into their original state of being, and to add some new ones that have been previously overlooked or never encountered before.
Another good history by Tuchman. I was unfamiliar with the history the United States had with China at the turn and first half of the 20th century and Stilwell's life is a good lens to see it through. Tuchman distills the personal records of Stilwell and brings him to life on the page through judicious use of his own words and memories. She also grounds this personal narrative in the flow of history and provides a lot of context for less knowledgeable readers like me. If you are looking to understand why China and the United States have such a troublesome history this biography is a good place to start. I would also recommend "The Coldest Winter" by David Halberstam as much of that book not dedicated directly to the Korean War is dedicated to what was happening in the US when Stilwell was in China and what happened after the Communists established control over mainland China.

Political freedom and economic freedom go hand in hand; classical liberal (libertarian) discussion of the proper role of government.
The good news? Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer was my favorite of the first three. The bad news? I’m still not buying into the Twilight phenomenon. The story has a love triangle, which is interesting until it becomes a bit too boring and tepid. Jacob the wolf and Edward the vampire each vie for Bella’s love, but the two must learn to work together when Bella’s life is in great danger. Bella, worried about who is after her, thinks becoming a vampire herself will be the only way she can be safe again- and protect her family as well. I don’t think I’ll be spoiling this for anyone when I say that Bella chooses Edward as her soul mate, and they begin planning a wedding, to the happiness of the Cullen clan. It took awhile (three very long books) but Bella finally begins to show some backbone in Eclipse. She stands up for herself again Jacob, and even is firm with Edward. That was nice to see. But she still lets Edward basically take her hostage during the weekend, and dismantle her truck so she can’t get away. I didn’t like that part. And honestly, there were a lot times where I was wishing she would end up with Jacob. He just seemed so much nicer than Edward, less controlling and moody. But what do I know about being seventeen and finding my “eternal love?” Not much I guess. There were also a lot of things I did like about this book. It was much faster paced than the first two, which made me want to applaud. The action was there, making me more invested in the story and the characters. I liked the background Meyer provides on the other Cullen’s, which I do think was a bit overdue. I am not in any anticipation to read the fourth and final book. If it is offered to me, I will probably read it, but I will not buy it.

i liked it very much. can't wait to see the movie!!!
I finally finished this one. (...continuing my tour of David Shields) It was very good. He mixed in photos with the text which reminded me of William Vollmann--occasionally awkward but generally adding a nice extra-textual element. I like the vein of auto-biographical exploration in these earlier books by him. It wasn't as much about TV as I would have thought. Recommended!
