Another book that kind let me down. The front cover is awesome, and there is some comparable art in there, and I do like how loathsome Daken is for a Marvel title character, (though in a way it makes him unlikable) but what started out as a cool premise did not really take the most interesting route, though it did predictably lead to Daken and X-23 both fighting each other as well as teaming up. If that was a SPOILER than you must not have read many comic-books, heh heh.
This is a story full of subtleties; quietly moving, intimate, aching, escalating in tension and quite beautiful. Once I understood the reason for Beth's writing style in You Are My Only, I fell in love with it. I guess it may not be appreciated by everyone but when you think about an author's means of conveying such emotion in a small time frame, it makes perfect sense. I also love stories with alternating narratives, especially when done well and Beth portrays Emmy and Sophie with insight and compassion. Emmy's voice is almost breathless, loose and disjointed but at the same time poetic which is extremely fitting considering her distressing & pitiful circumstances. “I have Baby’s sock in my purse. I have the smell of her in my heart.” It was wonderful to see Sophie gain courage and enlightenment once she had a support network of friends with next door neighbour Joey and his Aunts. In some ways she seemed a lot younger than her 14 years with the running from the unexplained "No Good" but in other ways she was wise beyond her years. Beth Kephart gives as much attention to her 'minor' characters as she does Emmy and Sophie. I loved Joey and his adorable Aunts, Cloris and Helen and sweet Autumn, Emmy's 'roomie' in the psychiatric institution. It was easy to relate to the heartache, the circumstances beyond their control but I didn't find this a depressing read. It was equally easy to revel in Sophie's new-found joy in small wondrous things; eating a cookie, flying a kite, having a friend. I'm wholeheartedly recommending this one to mature YA readers and adults and Beth will go on my "author's who write from the heart" list!

Love love love this series, I am sure I mentioned this before. Can't get enough of it! Now onto Phury...(I heard new book in this series will be coming out...hallelujah!)
I bought this book because the premise sounded so appealing. Two similar families that literally trade fathers. However, I felt like Alison worked so hard to vividly illustrate her story, using flowery language and many descriptive words that the tale itself suffered. And I found myself rolling my eyes every time Alison said "I can't remember, but..." or "I'm not sure if this is true, or I made it up, but..." This is supposed to be a memoir! It either happened to you or didn't! And if you're the one writing the memoir, then maybe you should remember!

I enjoyed the suspense of this book and it was a really fast read, but it was a little predictable. Being Christian authors you writing about evil, you kinda knew there was going to be a Christ figure to save them in the end. However it was a fun summer read.

** spoiler alert ** This is the best in the series so far! I've decided to read all of the chronicles of Narnia, starting with THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE and THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER is by far my favorite so far. I with it was longer (only 248 pages) because there were so many neat little adventure that I feel like Lewis could have added more. I have mixed feelings about the end, when they are quite near Aslan's land. The imagery is just beautiful, but it becomes about Christianity again (if you are an adult reading the book) which cheapens the mood a little for me. Anyways, this one is definately worth reading!!!
This book is one of my favorites. You really don't think it would go the way it does. Theodore Boone seems more like Encyclopedia Brown to start out with, but he turns out to be a really good detective. Don't expect complete closure for this book though!
