I don't quite remember if this is the same story I knew in my childhood ;p I loved the English story telling. I even read it out loud in this silly british accent with sound effects ;p I just thought OMG this is sooo stupid, how did I fall for it as a kid. I know it should be calling out my inner child BUT I think it's long dead, mentally that it, childhood comes out mostly in physical activities in my case, fooling around with kids, playing games, etc. It was entertaining, though my nieces are too young still, but definitely I'll get it with illustrations for future reads. Even I didn't understand what the hell was going on sometimes ;p I need to see the disney version, though I doubt they abide by the original story.

For a while I got really into contemporary fiction, and this was the book that got me into that...phase. I thought it was really good, but now that I think about it, it wasn't as amazing as I thought it was at first. I guess it's a good summer afternoon read, when you're really tired. It was a quick read. Nothing was so special about it. But I guess it was okay. There wasn't much depth to it, but I guess most teen fiction doesn't have a whole lot of depth to it.

Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard was a fun zombie novel set against the vivid backdrop of nineteenth century Philadelphia. Since I don’t like gory zombie novels, it was great that for the most part, the zombies in Something Strange and Deadly were corpses under the control of a mysterious necromancer. However, because the book does involve zombies, I really liked that at least one important character didn’t escape in one piece after being chomped on by a rabid zombie. Usually, characters in the zombie novels I’ve read either manage to survive with minimal damage or are killed outright. My favourite thing about Something Strange and Deadly was its protagonist, Eleanor. It was easy to like her because she was spunky, sensible, and determined to find her brother regardless of the social expectations placed upon her. Moreover, although Eleanor took some risks, she never appeared as stupid or reckless. I also liked the subtle romance between Eleanor and Daniel. Their chemistry never felt forced to me, and it was refreshing to have a paranormal story where there was no outright declaration of love.

a crazy book that questions the typical societal perception of insanity. great movie too.
Not exactly my personal boarding school experience, but I felt like it was a true look at boarding school. I couldn't put it down, so I stayed up all night reading it.
How can such a horrific true crime be such a boring book????

Oprah book club pick. I enjoyed it and felt that it was easier to read than the other two Faulkner's that were part of the Oprah Pick. It is not a happy book but then none of his are very happy. Main character is Joe Christmas - parallel to Jesus. The title of the book came from a remark that his wife once made about the fact that the light in August is different than any other time of the year.

I was surprised how historical and factual this book is. I thought it was going to be historical fiction with the World's Fair as the background but it is very much a non-fiction account. Still, the book was so interesting. It was so neat to learn about how much America was evolving at the time and how much new technology, products, and ideas developed because of the fair. In addition to the history, the story of the murderer was so shocking it was eerily entertaining. I really enjoyed the different aspects of this book and learning about such a significant event in American history.

Meh.. not all it was cracked up to be I think. Heard Angels and Demons was so much better.. it's now on my list of "to-reads".

This is a dark story, written with simple text (lack of commas, quotation marks, character names, location) but with a powerful and terrifying theme. I'm left wishing I understood what exactly was taking place and what happens next...
