This is for book club. A short read. Marquez is not my favorite author but he has a strong voice and tells a story in a very unique way. The imagery is vivid, the sense of place absorbing.

I read The Grapes of Wrath first, but I loved East of Eden more. This book is involved, intense, and has biblical undertones. But, more than that, this book has vivid characters. I guess what I mean is this: when I finished it, I wanted to pick it up and read it again.

A book that again I read when I was young and was impressed by the turmoil and conflict of the Second World War. In a country that was reeling from financial and world conflict a boy grew up enticed by a 'better way' and found out afterwards what that meant and also the demands made upon himself and his countries humanity. Great reading and a good introduction to the times.

I thought this book was okay, but not the best from Sarah Dessen. A bit dry and boring at parts, this is the story of two best friends, Haley and Scarlett, where Halley seems to lean unconditionally on Scarlett. It is not until Scarlett's life becomes a tragedy that Halley begins to learn what it takes to be someone as strong as Scarlett. Covering a romance with classmate, Macon Faulkner, and the struggles with the binds of family as Halley continually changes and evolves while her mother forces her back, this story was not as dynamic as I'd hoped. Nonetheless, still a good read.

This girl's father, who has been raping her for years, hence the mother's jealously, takes the blame. He goes to prison and seven years later is returning home where Meg has lived and grown up all by herself. She runs away and the story from that point on is about Casey, Jordon and Meg.
