Good book.

This was the first book on Marian apparitions that I ever read. A friend recommended it to me and he said it really opened his eyes. I had the same experience. The book gives concrete examples of times which the Blessed Mother has appeared. It's a good read!

Telling Tales edited by Nadine Gordimer This book was a gift from my roomate. It is one of the best gifts that I have ever recieved as a writer and avid reader. I am normally disappointed by anthologies or short story collections, but this book is the best of the best as selected by themselves. There are some true gems in this book. While quite a few are centered on death or relationships, these are the major drives in our nature, I suppose. Also the proceeds go to a good cause, the fight against AIDS. Go and buy it, buy it as gifts, and read! Enjoy!

Some poems were amazing. Most were at the very least good. However it pales in comparison to the genius that is "Against Love Poetry".
I try to read non-fiction in with the random fiction and this was a good choice. While I am not denying/ignorant of globalism, I enjoyed Friedman's user-friendly language and approach to the topic. It reminded me of reading for a college class as it challenged some of preconceived notions of the movement. Not necessarily to be taken as solid fact (nothing is anyway), I admired his fluid argument through thesis and examples to conclusions.

Lucky at cards, unlucky in love. Nothing more than your standard pulp fare ala 50's crime novel, but what sets this apart from other Block novels is that this book felt right. It felt like it just rolled off his tongue, off his fingertips, like the short con with a shell game. It's a bunch of bullshit but you eat it up because it's believable ( as opposed to some of his other character novels ). Block was born to churn out these types of novels- ones featuring femme fatale, a mark and the con man. It's not so much noir as pulp because there's no art to it. This book is pure entertainment and delivers that in spades.
I think it is fabulous, but then I wrote it!! :)

I have been addicted to Reginald Hill for about a year now. Finally I have the first in the Pascoe & Daziel series.
Hmmm....I have mixed feelings on this book. On one hand, it was good to be back in the Carpathians world, on the other hand, this book was not anywhere near on par with the last couple books in the series. It felt cut off from the overall storyline, and I was upset none of Zacarias' brothers or their lifemates got to meet and know Marguarita. The ending was abrupt and felt WAY too soon, with hardly any of the issues resolved. There was also no clear direction for the series or even the next story to go. Zacarias and Marguarita weren't fully fleshed out and seemed to be very one-dimensional to me. This felt more like Feehan's earlier work than her more recent efforts. I feel a little let down, to be honest.
