4.5 stars. The author sets the mood and setting masterfully, and I loved the journey into eastern Europe in particular. It did get a little slow at places, bogged down by too much historical detail. Otherwise a great read.

In all, Catching Fire is a heart-pounding, thrilling book that in my opinion is better than the hunger games in terms of its depth of themes, its increased worldbuilding scope, and its strong characters. I absolutely loved it. The only thing I didn't like about it is that this book ends on a crazy cliffhanger!

Written by a female author, it is told from the point of view of an older male preacher in the early 1900's writing a letter to his young son, knowing that the old man's days are numbered as his health declines. The religious insights were honest (showing struggles that many Christians deal with, and not pretending to know all the answers) and the style was excellent. The "action" of the plot is slow but does resolve as you fear it won't.

For the life of me... I have no idea why everyone refers to Lt. Eve Dallas as "sir". The ending is a little bit of a let down- I thought for sure the person at the end would've impersonated someone close to Dallas. And Dallas is a pain in the neck; the type of pain in the neck akin to a guy with "small man syndrome". The book was tagged crime mystery/romance- to me, this book felt incomplete as a crime mystery as well as a romance. It was mildly entertaining.

I can't believe what they went through with this one. Really we should never complain. I'm am constantly struck by the perseverance of the early settlers. They just made it work. Amazing!

This was a re-read for me. I read it in high school and I remember liking it. When I first started reading it this time I did not enjoy it at all. It has a very slow beginning and took quite a while to get to the real meat of the book. But once it got to that point, I didn't want to put the book down! After finishing it, I remembered why I liked it so much in high school and it made the slow beginning worth it. This is an excellent story about how one little girl grows up and the life lessons that she learns--I wish I could share it with my students somehow!
