Wow - it's hard to believe that these things are happening in the world. This book is bold and graphic. Just read it.

Feelings and words that come to mind: juvenile, over-the-top, ridiculous, embarrassed to be found reading it...
Everyone has their “to die for” book and their “never read” book, which is most likely still sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Well, “City of Bones” is definitely not the latter. This new teen novel, by Cassandra Clare, is the most intriguing book I have read in the past year. The book is complex yet simple all wound together. This book literally pulled me into this fantastical world, full of demons and heroes, while staying in the familiar setting of New York City. I would definitely recommend “City of Bones.” This book would be my number one recommendation to any of my friends for its imagery and the various unexpected events that occur between its pages. Cassandra Clare uses imagery that made the words on the pages come alive and pulled me along for the ride. Page after page, the reader gets sucked deeper and deeper into the story of the book. I became so engulfed in the book and even after I closed the book I could still picture the events of the book in my mind. The imagery of the book is so common, it takes you to places you have seen or visited at some point in time. Clare then takes that familiarity of the setting by taking that common setting and adds that fantastical touch. Soon, you look at the setting around you wondering if that run down building is really just an empty ramshackle building. The images run together so fluidly that it makes the plot of the story seem more mysterious and surreal in many ways. The plot of book is so unpredictable. It takes the reader along for a rollercoaster ride of unexpected events. You start out reading thinking you know how a situation will turn out; suddenly the rollercoaster takes an unseen sharp turn. Clare put the story together well using the small trivial obstacles of the story that seemed irrelevant to the bigger picture to really played a large role in the book. There are larger events that are taking place, but it is the small situations that the characters go through in between the different large events that build up the suspense and anxiousness the reader has to turn the pages of the book, as well as, the individual character personality giving the book depth. The book comes from a teenager’s point of view and it shows us the mindset of the main character through out each of these events by giving the teenage readers that common thought process and actions making it humorous. I would definitely recommend “City of Bones” to all of my friends. This book is a great read, it gets the reader so involved in the book they begin to feel like one of the characters. The plot of the book is suspenseful and keeps the reader eager to read more of the story, with a few laughs to lighten the mood of the book. “City of Bones,” by Cassandra Clare, is fantastical, as well as, realistic all well put together in this book.

I chose this book because it sounded like a really different kind of murder mystery...illusionists, giants, human flies... Well, it was different alright. Most of the book concentrated on finding the movement that was responsible for multiple grisly murders occurring on the streets of London. More mysteries were asked than answered. That's okay with me. But when the murders are eventually blamed on a cult who wants to bring back William Blake from the dead by encasing him in manmade amniotic fluid, the author lost me. The author's incredible use of language kept me reading the novel, but please don't waste your time. You'll only be disappointed in the end.

Russian characters can be referred to by about three names each, which adds up to a lot of different characters to keep track of.

Original Air Date: January 16, 2011 JONATHAN MAXWELL & Cruel Talk Radio,Public Murders-Lessons from Germany*Talking Progressive Politics Author JONATHAN MAXWELL joins us to talk about his highly acclaimed, well researched book "Murderous Intellectuals: German Elite and the Nazi SS." We'll also take some time to discuss how some Tea Party members have adopted Nazi-like tactics and rhetoric to attack the Obama Administration and its policies. We'll also discuss how conservatives manipulate ideas and images (such as patriotism and the American flag) to sway middle class voters away from populism and populist policies.***Jonathan's book has won an international literary competition: the "2011 Allbooks Review Editor's Choice Award" in the Best Non/fiction Book Category. "Murderous Intellectuals" was also rated one of the "20 Most Memorable Debuts of 2010" by online literary journal "Author Exposure"** . . . The show is packed full of interesting information. ***

Wow. Just wow. I finished this in a couple of days thanks to a gig proctoring some exams. Now, I have to admit that power reading "Housekeeping," which is basically what I did on this third time through, is not advisable. The great Doris Lessing said, herself, of this novel: "I found myself reading slowly, then more slowly--this is not a novel to be hurried through, for every sentence is a delight." Ms. Lessing is correct. Robinson's prose is too poetic and precise to read quickly. I am, with head down, sorry to say that I did read it with too much velocity. Yet, even as I knew I was not sufficiently savoring every sentence, I still say, "wow." When a work of literature hits one with such power on the third reading, and especially under such wanton neglect on the reader's part, labeling it a classic is not sufficient. P.S. And if that recommendation is not enough, Ms. Robinson confided to an enraptured audience recently, that I had the pleasure of counting myself a member, that she doesn't revise. It just comes that way. Now, read some of her sentences with that revelation in mind!

Cute! Have pictures from the Boston Commons Park where the statue is. Make sure to get these out for the students! Story is about a mother duck who has to get her ducklings to their father. Good story about family.
