A great book on making your web apps more focused, pleasant for the user, and for lack of another word... more "obvious". Lots of screenshots of good examples of web apps, tons of advice, well-organized, with bits of humor thrown in. It's slim, but it packs a punch. Definitely will be sharing this with my coworkers.

This is the second read for me. Still a classic. I love the presence of strong women in literature. This story follows a young girl raised in the midst of the religious revival; her mother moved her from the mid-west to the east coast to live with an aunt in order to protect her from the angry hand of her over zealous father. Her free-spirit is cultivated on this island where she sees how unconditional love proves to be the right way of life. Something that happens on her first sole adventure causes her to leave the protection of her family and the lighthouse island she has grown to love to pose as a cabin boy on a whaler ship. Things happen during that time that forever change her life and the lives of those she has grown to love. While she endured many hardships and losses, she easily could have given up, but instead she generated a priceless support group that helped her become, if possible, an even better, stronger woman than she was before. An abolitionist, an agnostic/atheist turned Unitarian, a friend, mother, lover, and all around good, honest person, she embodied much of what most women of that time period weren't. At least as far as living through the experiences that were her life lessons.

** spoiler alert ** I really liked the idea of this book, but I didn't find the writing very compelling and I was mostly disgusted by the heroine in the story. I couldn't believe how much time she wasted waiting for him and all the turmoil she caused her family and friends. I really felt like she was the bad guy in the story, and not Jake. He's just an ass and she should have never wasted time on him to begin with, but she was the one that kept the drama alive. I just couldn't really get into this story. I think if it had more comedy... if it was written by Sophie Kinsella or Helen Fielding... it could have been a really good book.
