I had to reread the accident scene to make sure the dog was ok!! I loved this book. My father is/was a fireman, so I really identified with him as a character... I loved how each chapter was in a new typeface because it changed to a new voice. I empathized with ALL the characters, which made the book that much more meaningful and powerful. Never ever saw that ending coming. Ever.

This book really pulled me right in, and didn't let me go. I actually found myself setting it down for half an hour at one point just because I was getting too anxious about what might happen next, and I needed the time to calm down. Seriously! VERY well-written, and definitely the best of the five Stroud books I've read so far. The foundational concept of the story (contact between our world and the fairy realm) is perfectly classic; but the very modern, real-world characters and narrative style give it a fresh immediacy that really makes it stand out.

Amazing! Has such a unique twist at the end. Also made me question how I live my life and what I could be doing better.
This book is beautifully written, but it really makes you ache. It gives incredible insight into the dehumanization process needed to make acts of war palatable to both sides of a conflict.

it's a pretty compelling story driven by the two great parallel engines of fiction, love and irrational violence. some memorable characters but also some cliches (ie the sherrif with the handlebar moustache). the prose is flat and the biblical allusions are painfully obvious and hamfisted - it's apples and oranges to compare but melville does this kind of thing with way more class.

I love Michael J. Fox. I started reading this because its been on my to-read list for a while and my students were also reading true stories. However, I got side tracked by other books and finished it weeks later. I found the way the times jump around a little distracting at first until I got used to it. I enjoyed reading about the movies and shows I was familiar with, but more so enjoyed hearing about Fox's growth and struggle as just a regular person making his life work. I really liked the ending :) Because I was reading this during school, I was able to call upon what I was learning about in class, which modeled for my students how real life free reading is personally satisfying.

Could. Not. Put. It. Down! The story of a celebrated opera singer, born to a deaf mother in a belfry high in the Swiss Alps. Shaped by the bells' glorious music, he discovers his extraordinary gift for sound. So many tragedies, yet he triumphs. I love this story about Moses Froben, world-renowned musico, who raised a son who by all rights he could never have sired.

I was out walking Tilly a few years ago and an older man stopped to admire her. We got to talking about dogs and he suddenly asked if I liked Steinbeck. I admitted that I am a big fan and he said I should really read this book. Many years later I finally got around to it, and while it is not as much a story about a man and his dog as I had imagined, I really liked it. This is not fiction, it's a memoir of Steinbeck's travels across the country in 1960- with his poodle Charley- to attempt to reconnect with the American people. I found myself thinking that I'd love to spend a day hanging out with this guy- he's funny, smart and kind- a total character. And you get the feeling he's writing honestly about himself (but then again, who knows?). I found the snapshots of American life at the time very interesting. This is probably not the most interesting book if you don't already have an appreciation for Steinbeck's fiction. Then again, how can you not love 'East of Eden'? Easily one of my favorite books (you should read that, if you haven't, then read this).
Lots of great photos to inspire one's one quest for the ideal kid's room. My only critique is that the design of many of these rooms tended to be consistent throughout the book. Fortunately for me, I enjoyed this "look" and got a lot of great ideas for the room I'm working on.

Calvino is a superlative storyteller. In this book of short fictions, the stories are not a catalog of What Happened, but a tableau of What Is.
