When I read this play back in school, I was asked what the meaning of it was by my teacher. “Some men die in their bed, some lose their head.” I was keeping with this earned resignation of its protagonist as to the world, but not his beliefs. Yet, it didn’t quite come across at the time. No matter, the play is still a great read. Bolt doles out true wit without sarcasm or cutting down another person, while also garnished with wisdom. One great line that I forgot (and which isn’t in the movie)... The traitor Rich is being coaxed into betrayal, and once it’s implied that he will betray More, Cromwell says he looks depressed, Rich says he isn’t, he’s “Lamenting...I’ve lost my innocence.” To which Bolt via the character Cromwell adroitly notes about such a person: “You lost that some time ago. If you’ve only just noticed, it can’t have been very important to you.” Zing. Very true. Those “loss of innocence” stories told in the tone of lament always bothered me, and now I know why: they are disingenuous. And only a sincere writer would be able to bring that to the surface. And Bolt is part of that rare breed. Also, the play gives context, some history: all the people that went with the King for political gain in the plot against More…also met the same fate as More. Always in life, thinking that a betrayer won’t betray you, as you are you is sheer hubris. A very important lesson to understand.

Very interesting book. I never realized how important salt was to so many historical events. I liked his observations near the end of the book on how the "in" salt has switched from pure white 100-200 years ago to grey/pink/red sea salt now!

This was a very interesting and well written book. What the Donner Party really went through is amazing. A good historical read. (Based on letters from the time)

The most comprehensive literary piece on Sufi mysticism, the Whinfield translation is widely acknowledged as the best so far. A great "introductory course" before tackling scholarly articles on Sufism (i.e., "Fundamentals of Rumi's Thought" by Sefik Can, ISBN: 1932099794), and immensely enjoyable to read! Great space opera with a lovely romance. Kit stows away on a space freighter to escape a wrongful arrest. He's a complex (and not altogether 'good') character, flirtatious, self-sufficient and distrustful of authority. But he's hopeless at making escape plans and he's soon captured by the gruff and very honorable Raine, the freighter's security chief. From the beginning these two are irresistibly attracted to each other. But Raine resists, very conscious of his position and Kit's vulnerability. I thought this romance was written extremely well. Both characters so wary and no unbelievable quick-fixes to their dilemma. When they do get together they burn up the sheets with their explosive passion. This book ticks all my boxes; Scifi, great romance with 'real' feeling characters and situations, plenty of humour and a full-length novel. Although I would have liked to have seen a bit more 'hard' science with the Scifi setting than this book has. I will definitely be buying more from this author.

My all-time favorite poetry book. I pick it up meaning to read a passage or two, and end up reading for hours.
I thought this was an important book and shows us as consumers how we're viewed in light of marketing products to us. I ended up reading so much of this book aloud to my husband, I was so excited about it. But, I'm just not sure I agree with his view of "healthy"--something isn't healthy just because it's low in calories. It's more than that.

Whether you agree with him, voted for him, think he's Hitler, whatever, this is a very interesting read. Part of it for me was nostalgia and remembering some of the events since the year 2000. I turned from a teenager into a college student. Many of the events talked about were a part of the definition of my life during Bush's presidency. The stories are presented from the former president's point of view and I happen to think he does a fair amount of criticism on himself throughout. Bush may not have been the greatest president and I didn't agree with a lot of what he did, but I do think that he is unjustly criticized for a lot of really crappy situations that couldn't have been handled much better by anyone else including a democratic president. In going quickly over the years from 9/11 up to 2008, it is interesting to see how quickly the Democrats tried to lie about their positions on things they voted for in the interest of demagoguing and gaining political influence. He accepts responsibility even unjustly in some cases for a lot of mistakes made and he makes a great case for his many successes which are so often ignored by the overly left biased critics out there. Reading his experiences put me in the shoes of the office of the President and gave me a lot of respect for the office and dare I say it even our current President Obama. I don't agree with hardly any of his decisions, but I respect that he has got a hard job. Anyway, great read and I highly recommend it.
