The best book I have ever read.. I have probably read it 10 times! It is a quick and easy read, but definately worth it!

Boyne writes convincingly from the perspective of a 9 year old boy. The story moves quickly and the ending left me chilled.

Oh dear. I'm in the final 1/3 part. It's been a slog, nothing has happened and I've just spent the last few minutes reading other reviews...I'm a little tempted to just stop reading... Okay, I didn't stop reading, I knew I HAD to finish this one. The first 500 pages Ayla is touring the painted caves for her training and nothing really happens, pictures of the various caves should have been included...at least the description be worthwhile. For those of us who love these characters, it was good to be with them again, but it is rather disappointing when nothing of note happens to them. And when something does finally happen, it is out of character and hard to stomach. I am a true fan. I reread these books frequently, they are my comfort reads. Sadly, this (hopefully) final edition had none of the resonance of the first books. I agree with one of my fellow reviewers, it is very evident that the absence of Ms. Auel's editor was probably a major factor in the end result not being up to our standards and we all suffer for it.

YOu really don't need a phrase book here...most people speak English or Russian...so learn some Russian.
"Lucifer's Bloody Balls"--Bones "I know I'm yummy, nummy"-Vlad LOLLLLL Oh, Bones & Cat and the rest of these characters can never get boring, nor can I ever get tired of them. Once again, another roller coaster ride, filled with emotions, packed with action and sex scenes that make you blush. I don't think I'll ever enjoy a supernatural duo, more than I enjoy Bones & Cat. What makes this duo even greater than others, is the fact that the woman, the heroine, doesn't ANNOY me AT ALL. She's not a sap, a mope and she doesn't need to be rescued at every turn. I've always admired that about Cat. That's what made me love the series, from book #1. Cat is not someone to mess with. Female or not, she can totally kick ass and be down with the big boys. She proves it again, in "This Side of the Grave" Apollyum has a contract out for her head. He's gathered the whole ghoul nation and wants to take out all the vampires and take over himself. First, he wants to start with killing Cat. Cat teams up with Bones, Menecheres, Vlad, Spade, Tate, Fabian & Dave on a thriller ride of excitement. It was so great to have Menecheres & Vlad front and center again. Vlad is one of my favorite characters and he does not disappoint in this book. There was also sad moment. Uncle Don, has been plagued with Cancer and against his wishes, he does not want to be saved or "turned" into a vampire. So, Cat has to deal with the fact that she's losing her only other family member, aside from her mother. Not to mention, her mother is now determined to join the Vampire race and fight. She's even taken up training, and it's putting Cat over the edge. Can she save the Vampire race, herself, and her mother from harm? Can she stand by and lose Don? Will her and Bones ever have a peaceful moment? High stakes, lots of laughter and great action!

Rating: 3.5 I was intrigued by the story after reading the blurb. I'd never read a steam punk, so I was looking toward to it. Some aspects of the tale I enjoyed, others not so much. The author does an excellent job with the world building. She paints a vivid image of a once lively city now claimed by the deadly Blight, zombies, & a rouge "Dr.". The plot is interesting enough & there are plenty challenges thrown the protagonist's way to keep it exciting. For me, the weaknesses lie in pacing and character development. The pacing drags in spots; mostly in the first half. It gets better in the last qtr of the story. Ms. Priest assembles a interesting cast of characters-- from a princess, to a one armed women, to an airship captain by the name of Croggon Hainey-- who managed to capture my attention even though he doesn't get much "screen time". You get a good sense of who the characters are at their cores, but it felt like only the surface was scratched with Briar. I understood her plight, but felt a distanced from her as far as a good connection. I believe this it book 1 in a planned series, I'm interested to see where this story goes next. Will there be a new "Big Bad" or will the Blight take center stage?
The bigger the better. After this read you will be in full possession of your thinghood. I admit, I only read 2/3 of it, but I skimmed the parts I didn't read, and I've read so much about it and I read all of History of the Concept of Time (cause the teacher didn't say how much to read) and though it seems like a rough draft for Being and Time, it's not, but its a good ground flora.
