I know that there are some out there that do not like this series as much as they like the Percy Jackson books, but I really enjoyed it. I love Riordan's sarcasm and humor. I look forward to book 3.

Ellis is an outstanding writer who successfully examines the friendships and rivalries of the men of the Revolution. He strips the book of historical context and examines the pith of several feuds, most interestingly setting up the book with the famous Hamilton-Burr duel. Each chapter (and the prologue) is worth reading on its own, though as a whole it is a journey through the American spirit. Extra points for its short length and accessibility.

Very sweet, simply tale of a princess "blessed" with ordinariness.

One of my favorite books of all time. It is short and very easy to read. It is a little sci-fi-ish in the beginning but once you get past that it describes the life of a Jewish boy before the Black Plague and is based on true events. Very emotionally-provoking!

A really great take on the traditional sort of underdog girl becomes hero story.

I thought this was an excellent book to help all of us not only understand how a stroke happens but how the brain is so versatile. We all have more control over our brain than one would think.

This undistinguished epistolary novel is memorable principally for its vivid and insightful descriptions of Quebec in the decade after Montcalm's defeat on the Plains of Abraham. It also has some sensible things to say about marriage, and at least one of the letter writers--the charming Arabella Fermor--possesses an original and engaging voice. After each character becomes engaged to the proper person and the whole crew returns to England, however, the novel loses power and interest. This is a shame, for all this occurs at the end of the third and penultimate volume, when there is still about 40,000 words to go. The author then uses manufactured complications, the infuriating (though noble) scruples of the principal lovers, poorly motivated reticences, and the interpolated narrative of an uninteresting minor character in order to pad the novel to four volume length--the fashionable standard of the time.

Fantastic. Is you have any interest at all in the ins and outs of demonic forces and how to work against them, read this.
This time Kinsey Millhone is asked to find out who really killed Jean Timberlake 17 years ago in a little berg called Floral Beach. She is stonewalled by just about everybody and the ones talking aren't being honest so how is Kinsey to uncover the truth. Well in typical Kinsey fashion, she messes the clues until something actually makes sense. This isn't my favorite of the series. In fact I almost gave up on it as all of the characters are unlikable and irritating. I'm glad I stuck it out because the killer was definitely a surprise. Truth to tell, I found this earlier Kinsey book to be rather boring. The later books in the series are much better written with the intent to keep the readers interest. It's okay to have an annoying character but when it's every single one of them, it makes reading difficult.

Another slice of nonsense from the master of it, the late great Richard Laymon... my guilty pleasure. After Midnight is the story of Alice and her breasts, who are looking after someone else's home while they are away. Alice (name changed) and her breasts get involved a preposterous chain of events that generally start off with a chance encounter that begins badly then takes a turn for the worse. It's a bizarre tale of sex and violence that Laymon must have set off writing and jotted down anything that came to mind. It shouldn't be entertaining but, hey, it's Laymon so somehow it is, even though I never worked out who the main character was, Alice or her breasts...
