Erm, what was all the fuss about? A main character who seems to be a vehicle for the author’s fantasies about himself; a girl who is ‘intriguing’ because she barely speaks and has a black-and-White view of vengeance; and the most cliché of villains. Plus it takes half the book to set the scene. Pretty disappointing.

I had my glowing review all done but technology thwarted me when I went to post it. This one is the complete 5 star package: compelling story, told in an interesting way, beautiful illustrations that propel the narrative and make it richer. His family members serve as the characters in this memoir of their experiences in Vietnam before the war and after their last minute escape to the US, and they are complex with just a few deft touches, but as each person recounts a part of the story, the narrative is not bogged down. The circular story made me want to immediately pick it back up again.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very historical feeling, epic in scope, kept me enthralled from beginning to end.

This book was so disturbing but I LOVED it. Scott Smith has such a gift for just telling the story...balls to the wall, no stopping, the story just contines to steam roll toward it's ending without stopping to let anyone off. It's scary and sad and disturbing, with images that stick with you long after you close the book. Effing genius.

starting to get bored with the whining and angst. On team Jacob.
Alot of her books have to do with the underground railroad and slavery. But most of the books are written from the white perspective. This book surprised me as it was really a slave's story- after she had escaped and then was then recaptured. I think the first part of this story-where she escapes- is in the Sugar Camp quilt book, but I can't remember. Althought slavery is not a fun subject I really enjoyed the characters and the history in the story.

Ostensibly a guide for screenwriters, but unlike most other books aimed at that market, it doesn't offer much in the way of specific techniques and guidelines. Rather, it's a readable distillation of Joseph Campbell's work on mythic storytelling, using examples from well-known movies. Vogler recognizes that there is no single fixed formula for a good story. The book is presented as a way of looking at and thinking about story elements in ways that will connect with an audience. Like most books of this nature, in a practical sense it's more useful as a guide for criticism than for story development. It also fails to provide as many examples as it should -- reading a page of text on some character archetype with no illustrations from classic stories is like reading a history book with no references. However, there's something about this book that seems to get my creative juices flowing. I can almost always count on being inspired with a good idea or fix for my own stories after reading a chapter, even if it's not directly related.

I love autobiographies and this one had the humor matched with the unexpected humanity of sorrow and reality. Dick Gregory's story is just raw and real, so if you enjoy learning more (as in, the WHOLE STORY) about people who are or used to be heavy in the public eye, this is a GREAT book to read. Enjoy!
