My favorite of Peter Hoeg's books. A clown, a great love affair, quest, mysterious guiders. Exciting, mysterious, fun, thought-provoking, spiritual, and fast-paced.

Due to family histories and professional exposure to different people who purportedly share some of these diagnoses, this is very interesting topic to me. The introduction is very lucidly written--my understanding of bi-polar disorder increased somewhat, but the quality of the writing goes down as the book proceeds. Mostly because he starts hitting you over the head with the parts of the thesis he had already proved, and doesn't state it in a new way or add much new information. The book was also interesting vis-a-vis some apparently opposing parties have met in litigation. The historical tidbits about the different leaders which I did not know kept me going in the book, and are of some interest. As some reviews point out, correlation is not causation. Sure, many bi-polar or hyperthymnic people are bright, and their brain chemistry made them the leaders they were, but just because they succeeded in certain instances, and certain "homoclite," or mentally normal, or "conventional" leaders failed, does not necessarily mean that all would.

This book taught me that I was not immune to the charms of the "anti hero." Follett can make you forget everything he's just told you about a character that would make you detest him on so many levels; make you hope that he overcomes any obstacle to stand in the sun, and then yank you back with a jolt to find that your original estimation of the person's character proves him as vile as you had once believed and that you've been courted and won by a monster, right under your own nose. Obviously, this is what happened to me as I read Eye of the Needle. I have read many Follett novels since this one and what I have learned about Follett is that all of his characters are chiseled equally as fine. Still, the Needle stays with me. Shocking, really.

I am still trying to digest this book, since I just finished reading. It was very captivating, but it was a little too sad for me, maybe even shocking at times. It does make me want to go other books by the same author, which doesn't happen too often with me.
Dani Solomon is talented, beautiful, and comes from a wealthy family. She is a member of the Hawtones, an a cappella group at her high school, and a star player on the school’s tennis team. She loves the little boy she babysits for, Alex. But Dani has a secret. She has thoughts she can’t control. Thoughts of outing her best friend in public, inappropriate thoughts about those around her, but scariest of all are the realistically disturbing images she sees in her mind of herself murdering little Alex. When Alex’s mother won’t let Dani quit babysitting for him, she tells Alex’s mother about her disturbing thoughts setting off a series of events that will put her life in danger and turn the media spotlight on her small town. The town wants justice, and they want to make Dani pay. First off, let me say that I will be able to sell this book to teens at my library with no problem. It is a story with the juiciest gossip, a persecuted teen, and the most frightening consequences. The teens I know will love this book and want more like them. Dani is a likable girl with a real problem. She makes a mistake by telling the wrong person about her inappropriate thoughts and that causes the town to go into an uproar. The pacing is spot on and propels you through the novel making this an extremely fast read. There is action and danger that will keep teens on the edge of their seats to know what will happen next. Most importantly, there are people who are good friends to Dani, even after they find out her secret. On a side note, it has been an incredibly long time since I read a book with third person omniscient narration. It was kind of startling when I first read the book. I felt like an outsider looking in at the story rather than an active participant. It works for this story though, because so much of it depends on the voyeuristic characteristics that Third Person Omniscient narration can give. You can see all parts of the story while they are happening. Overall this book has a lot of teen appeal and will definitely attract teens. However, it wasn’t one of my favorite books to read this year. Yes, it was an incredibly quick read, and yes it was interesting, but I found the story to be a little over the top. Great sell to teens, but it wasn’t for me. Cautions for sensitive readers: Some violence and disturbing images.

Can I just say that I LOVE Lisa Ann Sandell?!! If I buy any books this year, hers are on the top of my list!
This was a very inspiring book. I wish I had read it before the accusations of mistruth. I plan to read the book by Krakauer, dispelling Mortenson's book. That may change my rating. It is odd, though. Krakauer is qouted in Mortenson's book giving very positive comments on his efforts in Pakistan. Regardless, the book is still very enlightening and makes me realize how much we Americans take for granted.
Compellingly sad and hilarious at the same time, this is a portrait of a highschool senior who doesn't know he's an alcoholic. I guess I'm still close enough to my painful teen years that, at times, I was really appalled by the main character. A thought-provoking look into the inner workings of a teenage boy.
the gothic story of love and hatred
