I can definitely say I underestimated this book. I've had this book for years and with my new system of reading, this was the next book on the list. Of course, I wasn't happy after reading Flyy Girl and really wanted some variety. However, this book was meaty. There was a plot. There was no slang language. People spoke like they had sense. Because just because you may not come up in Beverly Hills, doesn't mean you're supposed to sound like a Hillbilly. This character took it upon herself to get out of a bad situation. She worked her way to make sure she kept food on the table for her kids the right way. I regret calling this a ghetto drama, because I think more than people who love that genre could understand what the character was going through. My only complaint which I have deducted a point for is mispellings. Maybe Triple Crown is a new publisher, but they should at least have an editor for their writers. There were a lot of words mispelled, not to mention a chapter in the middle of the book was at the end of the book as well. I don't believe that was supposed to be intentional. But all in all I give it a thumbs up.

The following is taken from Wikipedia, b/c I’m too lazy to write my own synopsis right now: Set during the Great Depression of the 1930s, Water for Elephants tells the story of a young man who leaves his life as a Cornell University veterinary student and joins the circus after his parents are killed in an automobile accident. The story is told as a series of memories. The main character, Jacob Jankowski, is in a nursing home and reminisces about his time with the circus. Jacob is employed as the show’s veterinarian and he faces a number of challenges in dealing with the head trainer, August, while also learning how to function in the hierarchy of the circus and falling in love. This is one of the most enjoyable books I’ve read so far this year. It’s not particularly “deep” or earth-shattering, but it was such a joy to read. First of all, who doesn’t like the circus? Even though this book reveals some of the grittier realities of circus life (or what it once was), it’s still a lot of fun to imagine the big top and performers. I also like the perspective of Jacob as a grumpy old man, looking back on his story. His stubbornness is humorous, but also insightful as to how life changes when you grow old. Water for Elephants is a quick read that draws you into the plot. The characters are colorful and interesting (especially Rosie, the elephant). The ending is a bit “neat and tidy,” and wrapped up quite quickly, but I’m ok with that. Like I said, it’s not a life-changing novel, it’s just a great summer read.

almost finished with this book, and I'm really disappointed =/ don't know what I expected, but I think the plot is kind of lame, probably because I have read another book that's kind of similar, and yeah I really hate when that happens, I just feel that I'm reading the same story in a different way. The book got a lot better towards the ending, I actually liked the ending, maybe because it was the only place in the book that had a little bit of action..it's just a shame that the first part of the book was soooo boring and I honestly couldn't stand the protagonist, she was just really annoying and childish.. So I guess it’s 2 stars…I didn’t really hate it, but it’s nothing I would read again.. and I probably wouldn’t read another Lauren Kate book.
