After "The Undomestic Goddess", I haven't able to pick up a Sophie Kinsella book in a while. So, you can just imagine how excited I was to finally get my hands on the fourth installment in the Shopaholic series. In true Kinsella fashion, Shopaholic and Sister is as fun to read as the others. Although, if you ask me, I think this one would be my least fave in the series. Becky was really, really, neurotic here (read: honeymoon "souvenirs" and the "angel bag") and her impulse purchases had me cringing. Over-all, a fun read.
My Review: OMG, I am so excited about this series. This was a phenomenal first book to get it all going. This is a post-apocalyptic world created by Joss Ware and it is brilliant! Elliott and 5 others were hiking in a cave near Sedona when the apocalypse happened. Something about where they were hiking caused them to sleep through the next 50 years. When they woke up, it was 50 years after the world fell to ruin, but they hadn't aged a day and even had new powers that they are still discovering. They awoke to a world in ruin where very few people have survived. Civilization has fallen and gangas (zombie-like creatures) rule the night. The book starts 6 months after this group has awakened and they are trying to find their way to Envy...the largest known civilization left in the Western half of the country. Envy turns out to be what's left of Las Vegas, now called New Vegas, or N.V. = Envy. A day out from arriving at Envy, they run into a group of teenagers being attacked by gangas and Jade, who is on horseback trying to save them. Elliott is immediately in lust with Jade (it's been 50+ years since the guy got laid.) He also quickly discovers that there is a nasty little twist to his new-found power of healing. I LOVED Elliott. He was a doctor before the change and he still has that heart of caring...for everyone. He is devastated and still trying to absorb all that has happened within the last 50 years. PTSD, sleep deprivation, fury, nightmares, and overwhelming sadness are just some of the daily problems that he is dealing within his psyche. It's a strange new world and he has no idea how he and his friends fit into it anymore when everything that they knew and loved is suddenly gone. He feels an incredible pull to Jade, but doesn't want to give into that as he misunderstands how she fits into this world and the men around her. Jade is a survivor. She survived 3 years as a prisoner and slave to the Strangers before she escaped. Rape, beatings, torture were just the tip of the horrors that she had to survive and she is still on the run from them. But that does not keep her from playing in her part in an uprising that is brewing against the Survivors being led by Lou and his brother Theo, two computer geniuses that were alive when the apocalypse happened and doing all in their power to take back their world. This is a powerful book with a fantastic group of characters. I think that this is definitely going to be a keeper series for my closet if this first book is anything to judge it by. I am so excited to move onto book #2!!!

This book calls for the minting of a new adjective. Calling it "sycophantic" is like calling the universe "large." I would rather watch an hour-long video of Bob Woodward performing fellatio on George W. Bush than glance at the table of contents.

I could NOT put this down. Haunting. Too close to the realm of possibility for comfort. So beautifully written, and startlingly authentic. I'm surprised it too me so many years to finally read it, but I'm glad; I don't think I would have connected to it as much if I'd read it when I was younger.

This was one of my favorite books that I ever read. The book was split into 2 parts- so it was like reading 2 different books. The book was very well written and you really felt for the characters.

I enjoyed this book very much, but it was short. And it was obvious. There were portions that just felt abbreviated and incomplete. Near the end, there is great action as their usually is. But it seems to be cut short, and then you are in the epilogue with no clear picture of how you got there. It works, but it felt choppy, abbreviated, rushed for a publishing deadline maybe. The characters (the people) could have been built a little more. When the book hits the nuts and bolts, it just feels short. There is also a soapbox moment that feels out of place. It's the right spot to have it, but because the characters and the story feel abbreviated, it doesn't feel like it fits. But let me just say, I would love to have a pair of Puzzle and Riddle! Who wouldn't? Wow. Imagination.
This is one of the best ghost stories I've ever read. I'm still trying to work out (in a good way) what really happened at the end. I'd love to talk about this one with somebody.

This Book Will Save Your Life begins with Richard Novak, a wealthy Los Angeleno, having a health scare that sends him to the emergency room. The trauma causes Richard to look at the world and his outward success differently and he begins to make connections with the people he encounters--the man who sells him donuts, a woman he sees crying in the produce section, a neighbor he had never talked to--and with the people that he has spent a great deal of his adult life trying to avoid--his parents, his brother, his ex-wife, and the son he abandoned. By trying to pay just a bit more attention to what is going on around him, Richard's life changes dramatically. I loved this book. It's quirky, has a weird title, but is unexpectedly uplifting. It makes you believe that small changes of perception can lead to big experiences.
This one was so much better than the second and third. And I think that's all I am going to say about it.
