Perhaps because I don't really enjoy fantasy, getting through the new vocabulary with this writer is very bumpy. He doesn't have a knack for making it reachable today. I'm STILL trying to get thruough it.

Amazing book! It's one of the most realistic zombie novels I have read. It was both socio-political satire and beautifully written zombie novel. I loved that it was written in different perspectives of people all over the world with different backgrounds and different experiences during the "Zombie War." It felt like I was reading an actual ethnographic of people's accounts of war. I kept thinking, "Wow, Max Brooks really did his research." Yeah, it was that good. Great, great novel and addition to the zombie genre. Interested to see how they'll do the movie.

An electoral murder mystery - I don't think there are many of those. I love crappy mystery novels and this isn't that. It is actually a well-written mystery novel. Such a rarity. I recommend this book to everyone and so far, all of my peoples have loved it.
Tash Aw brilliantly tells this riveting and absorbing tale through the perspectives of three people who had close personal relationship with the main character; Johnny Lim. The way the book starts with Johnny's son, Jasper, narrating the story of his father based on background research and memory; then abruptly turning to Johnny's late wife's diary entries and eventually ending with Johnny's once best friend, Peter's confessions was a novel idea - not an easy one to execute but Tash Aw did it….and did it flawlessly. While 'The Harmony Silk Factory' is not a historical view of Malaya during the British occupation of the land, neither is it a tale of heroism and triumph of the human spirit. This is a story of a son unraveling his non-affectionate father's past and ultimately realising why his father became the kind of man that he was in that time in history in Malaya. The story has enough humor to make it an enjoyable ride even though the tale is griping and poignant in the end. The justified critical accolades for the author, is well deserved indeed.
AWESOME. I NEED TO READ THE SEQUEL OR WHATEVER. EDIT: NEVERMIND I AM TURNED OFF UPON LEARNING WHAT A HOMOPHOBIC DOUCHE CARD IS IN REAL LIFE.

I haven't read anything from Roald Dahl since I was a kid, and all I recall reading was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This book was very fun. I loved the humor and enjoyed how imaginative it was.
