I mean, for a while there, especially near the end, I started to skim, it got repetitious and borrrrring. But then the last bits of Gollum/Smeagol were SO FUNNY--before the spider part, just so funny, like Gollum is the drollest ever. "Did we have beautiful sleep?" That's funny. Tolkien is better when he's able to keep it light and witty, he's never cruel, but smart and amusing. He can be so delightful, it's disappointing when his language is dragged down by his plot. Who's an original thinker? ME, DUH.

This book was great! I really loved the characters. They were so funny and loveable. The only thing that made me not give it a 5 stars was that it was confusing when they were talking about both characters, beacause this book was put into two point of views.
The prose is Terrific in this book. It's a portrait of a miser, although the title is his daughter's name. Set in france during the early 1800's (in the time it was written), it's amazingly modern in its view of cut-throat capitalism (am I being redundant here?) and materialism's pervading influence on society. It also has some very modern and still very accurate views on small town vs. big city life and mores. Although it's a tragedy I wasn't heartbroken at the end. The characters are all fleshed out, but kept at arm's length. It's more about miserliness and it's far reaching effects.

Grace was one of those characters that was way too stupid to live.

Normally I'm a big Stephen King fan but I didn't get the same 'fright' with these stories as I have with his earlier short stories (Raft is one that comes to mind.) Still, it was a good read and I would recommend it.
This was the first, and hopefully last, Eugene Izzi book I'll ever read. The Take is full of ridiculous tough-guy posturing, one-dimensional characters, and insanely over-the-top homoeroticism. I couldn't figure out while I was reading it if it was supposed to be a gay love story or not, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't, which made all the scenes in which the salt-and-pepper ex-con pair work out together, fantasize about lying on the beach together, sweat together, wrestle together, and cry and finger the other's boxing trunks when one of them dies really weird and confusing.

This book details the quest the somewhat "quirky" Glenn Gould goes on to find the right piano. It also gives the reader a great glimpse into the historical period in which Gould lived as well as the lives of those around him including his family and the piano technicians etc who worked with him.

3.5 It was a weird book for JQ...It was different and I didn't enjoy all the scenes in the book, but, overall it was great
I greatly enjoyed this book. Steinberg did an amazing job describing the characters and giving me a full picture of all these grand tannaitic sages. Although Steingberg took some liberties with the plot, it seems he really stuck to the general character descriptions as depicted in gemaras and mishnas and I really got a great picture of what it was like to live in that time. Moreover, Elisha ben Avuya's struggle was so great and so interesting and even so relevant to today's times. I am merely left wondering, would Elisa ben Avuya still have become Acher had Modern Orthodoxy existed back in his time?! Or rather would so many of us have become "acher" as well?! Lastly, my only criticism, is that at times i felt as though steinberg were trying to get across his reconstructionist judaism agenda, and while it did seem to mimic elisha's struggles, i couldnt help but wonder if Steinberg was transferring his own woes and conflicts onto this tannaitic character. Bottom line, I now understand why it's required reading in so many Jewish History courses!
