This was at least my third try to read this book and I finally forced my way through it. I wanted to like it, but that was difficult with the pages of exegesis on U.S. social turmoil in the sixties and Liberian history and civil war. Worse (to me) was that these carefully organized and researched treatises were supposed to be the thoughts of the main character, told in her first person memories. It rang false especially because within the story, what we see instead of what we're told, Hannah/Dawn isn't much of a communicator. Having said that, it may seem contradictory to say that what I liked about the book is that it made clear for me some of the ins and outs of Liberia's civil war.

My favorite American poet. He is hilarious and obsessed with tight little knots of sound.

Okay, I'm probably not going to say a lot about this book because I don't think there's a lot I can say. I can't say whether or not it's the truth about urban D.C. or whether it's just a far-fetched and offensive stereo-type. But from all I've heard about the drug problems over there, and the way a lot of people live... this book probably hits very close to home for many. But the book was good, which surprised me. I was hooked into it. I wasn't sure how much I was going to like it, because when reading a book you usually are into it if there's something in it you can relate to, or have a deep interest in. And, well, there isn't anything I could relate to in this book being a middle-class, white, suburban dwelling, nineteen-year-old girl. And the one thing there was a shared topic of interest in this book was animal rescue stuff. And while that was addressed more often than not, it wasn't addressed a lot and in full. The book was still good, though, with interesting characters that seemed fully fleshed out and appear to have full, consistent backgrounds. The inner-workings and relationships everyone has with one another is also very interesting. It just gives evidence that though Lorenzo really does have a drive and desire to leave his old life behind him... he can't. The only major problem I had with the book, was the habit the author had of repeating information. Not really neccessary information either, simple, easy to remember information such as a characters full name was repeated over and over again. But really, other than that, this book was awesome. And if you're looking for a new type of genre to get into, I think this might be a new and popular one. Urban Lit. maybe? I don't know. I'm sure someone will think of a name for it.

First sentence: "He found the body on the forty-third day of his walk." After being amazingly annoyed at Elizabeth George for murdering one of my favortie characters in this series.. and then she made it worse by spending her next book detailing the life of the young rascal who was responsible. This book is back 'on track.' Things will never be the same without Helen. But Tommy sounds like he will heal.

katie borrowed this and never gave it back.
I liked this author's style a lot. A fun-to-read mystery with pretty believable characters.
I had read that this book was by one of Japan's best mystery writers, and it is good, with a twist at the end you don't expect. However, I felt the language/dialogue was stilted, probably due to the fact that this book was translated from Japanese. Also, all the characters' names are Japanese, which took a while to get used to and I spent the first part of the book trying to remember who was who.
