This book has a permanent place on my nightstand. I've read it many times since I was a kid, and it seems new every time I pick it up. It works on many different levels - as a coming-of-age tale, a "ghost" story, an examination of friendship, racism and justice. It makes you question your beliefs and perceptions and shows you where to find true heroes. The story centers around the Finch family who live in a small Alabama town during the Depression. It is told from the viewpoint of Scout, the youngest child in the family, who must deal with growing up, making friends, and learning about her father as he represents a young black man accused of raping a white woman. A truly amazing, poignant and important novel. The movie starring Gregory Peck is also outstanding.

This books is completly about books. Lots of lovely quotes, and the plotline is ingenious, too. Its meant for the younger reading group, but isnt Harry Potter too. :-)

Another lake house book - quite long - I picked up to while away a few VERY rainy days. It actually went nicely with New York (that I also just finished). A good yarn about our early history - teh Reveloution, our founding Fathers, slavery.... A bit long-winded and slow but interesting none-the-less. Not for everyone.

Great plot, poor writing. I don't need every development in a story to be foreshadowed. Dan Brown's plotlines are always full of twists and turns, which I enjoy, but every chapter doesn't need to end with the line, "if only so and so had known that soon he would wish he'd had ____ with him." For me, that became tedious.
