A big part of me suspects that Steve just wanted to write a cowboy book, and also wanted to write a big series. Then, when he started writing the cowboy book, he decided about halfway through to make it into a series. But, either way, when he finished this novel, he had no fucking idea where any of it was going. Actually, I suspect that's how he ALWAYS writes, now that I'm thinking back over his books: has an idea and just goes with it, doesn't know how it will end or what's gonna happen, and if it sucks, a bunjillion people will buy it anyway. That's how he rolls.

** spoiler alert ** This was a sweet little romance. Mostly fluff, but easy to read, characters fairly likeable. I would have loved to have seen more interaction with the two chefs, they were hysterical. I think if this book could have been fleshed out a bit more in writing it would have been a real keeper. One scene that was a bit more than a closed door romance and I was concerned I would have to put it in my never to finish bin, but it did go to far. If you want completely closed door this isn't it, but if you are aware that there is one spot that starts to push it a touch you might could steer clear.

The Long Walk is a story that draws you in from the start. Its society is disturbing and even more disturbing is the idea that its citizens line up to watch the walk. I won this book during a summer reading contest one year during high school. This is an excellent read, but not for the faint of heart.

Displays the uneasiness of the republican government with irregular troop formations and geurilla warfare. The interactions between the soviet and spanish comrades are amusing, especially those highlighting the conflicts between the machismo of the spanish men and the ideological orientation of the new soviet woman.
