** spoiler alert ** This is the kind of book that begs to be discussed. Ishiguro doesn't seem to present one clear viewpoint on the ethical issues raised, but instead he opens up a lot of questions. Should we even ask why they didn't try to escape? I don't think so. Instead, why are we as humans so resistant to our fate? Is it a good thing that we resist, or would it be better to give into our fate willingly?

The best Coelho's books.

I was fascinated by the book. I learned about forgery, the Mormon church and so much more. I have recommended this book to many people.
My love for The Beginning of After first began when I first saw its absolutely gorgeous cover... and after I read what the novel was about, I had a warm gut feeling it would be a contemporary novel I would come to really enjoy as well. Jennifer Castle has made a wonderful debut with The Beginning of After… and its cover is a perfect reflection of its contents. Laurel is filled with pain and grief for her family, but despite all of this, there’s always a ray of light and love that shines through for Laurel in her moments of darkness. I have so much admiration for Laurel and how she continued to persevere in the face of such a horrific and tragic turn of events. I silently wept for Laurel’s loss as she struggled to cope and come to terms with the “after” of the car incident that changed her life forever. Even though I knew what would happen to Laurel’s family, it was still so sad to read and her grief became my own. She channels her pain into working with animals… and focusing on her schoolwork so she could attend a good college and make her parents proud. There’s a comforting familiarity to Jennifer Castle’s writing. It’s not as poetic as I might have assumed… but it still strikes right into your core. And while romance is certainly incorporated into the story, I wouldn’t exactly consider it the main focus. Laurel’s relationship with David is a complicated one at best. Their families may have been friends but it’s hard for Laurel to think about David without her thoughts leading to his now comatose father, the man behind the wheel who Laurel finds responsible for the accident. David’s path in dealing with his grief takes an entirely different path compared to Laurel’s, but as time progresses, we slowly see how these two can help heal each other for the better. For those who love reading contemporary novels that hit all the right spots in your heart, Jennifer Castle’s The Beginning of After is not to be missed. It’s a beautiful novel of loss and heartbreak… but also of healing and hope. I’m already looking forward to reading Jennifer Castle’s next novel!

Very good, and not at all what I expected. I think I expected a typical pro-African-American rights novel, and that is so far from what it really is. The first chapter is one of the best first chapters I've ever read.

I love adventure and this book took me on an adventure beyond the world I could imagine. The take over the mission, the unplanned early awakening of a crew member and thhe eventual landing on coyote. Take an adventure aboard to coyote and read how the new settlers tame this new world

nice time travel tale. the series goes to 6 books, and can be a bit unbelievable -- how many times can one woman be kidnapped in a lifetime, after all. but a good, light read.

I really liked the story in the novel, although sometimes the characters and their actions are a bit stereotypical or over-the-top. That can be annoying at times, but it wasn't enough to deter me from enjoying this book. It's about a man who is considered successful by everyone he knows, and yet realizes that this success is preventing him from being who he wants to be. So he leaves his life behind and heads out to the Ozark Mountains. The backstory is that his son had been to this same area, fell in love with a woman he could never marry, and eventually died. Yes, this is part of the "over-the-top" material I referred to above. But what redeems it is the way that the story of this man and his son intersect with the lives of the other characters. You have to hear all of the stories in order to get the bigger picture. And that's the part that makes this book worth reading.
