It was just as charming the second time around - I love the way Joyce alters his narrative structure to reflect the age of Stephen. I love the lyrical sense of a young writer's struggles to be independent of his family, church, and state. The entire thing is brilliant.
Didn't like the ending.

I remember reading this book because of a girl. Wasn't worth it.

Honestly, I don't know if I can recommend this book. I liked parts of it, but never felt fully invested in what happens to the characters. There was just too much crammed into the storyline (and too much sketchy science) for me to believe it well enough to lose myself in it. It wasn't bad writing, exactly, and I can't fully articulate what bothered me about it, but I am not sure I'm willing to pick up what is clearly going to be a sequel. (On the other hand, I said that about the Stieg Larsson series, and that's a good two months of my life that I'll never get back.) ------- edited after hearing an interview with Deborah Harkness. I appreciate this book (and her background as a write) a little more now. I'm upping it to 4 stars.
I picked this first one up on a whim just because it looked interested, and it was. Just for pure entertainment, it was good. Nothing monumental though. I read the second and third for the same reason.

I usually hate historical fiction because it tries to hard to be educational. Sorry, if I want to be educated, I'll read non-fiction. But this was not like typical historical fiction. This definitely falls in a literary fiction category--and not a it-so-literary-it-unintelligible-and-unenjoyable--an awesome story in spite of a few pretensions. The little anecdotes about small town life and the antics of young teenage boys pre-video-games that really carried the day. Makes me want to youtube the opera. The ending was perfectly satisfying, without being saccharine.

an interesting book with a lot of information about the women who were influential in colonial times and the early years of the united states. my only complaint is with the tone of the book. i guess i was expecting more history and less cokie.

I've literally been reading this book for three years. I think part of it is that it's so good, yet painful, that I kind of hate the idea of finishing it and I'm worried about what's going to happen. It's a very long book and that's part of what shows that it's a sort of stylistic bridge between his early work (Goodbye Columbus, etc.) and his later work where he's letting go these intense, powerful sentences that rise and fall and build and excite like a rollercoaster.

I loved this book! The whole series is great but the first (sigh) was awesome!
