Wow. Just... wow. Let me start by saying that I'm a HUGE fan of the Chemical Garden series. Yesterday (February twelfth) when it came out, I got up early before school just so I could download it onto my Kobo. I was incredibly excited, and I'm happy to say that I was not disappointed. Or, maybe I was? This book is indeed a love/hate relationship. Many a times I wanted to scream and throw the book at the wall, cursing that 'Its not fair!', or hold it close to my heart and weep for these poor fictitious characters. The Chemical Garden series is certainly one I love. It is the perfect combination of romance and dystopia, but lacks action. I think the plot makes up for that. If you are one that enjoys intricate plots, this series, and book, is good for you. I found myself reading a few chapters and stopping to think. This book really is quite the thought provoker, and makes me question who I am as a person, who we are as a society, and where we are going in the world. It is not often you get a book that can do this, all well telling such a story that can break your heart, make you giddy with excitement, or so angry you can't speak. DeStefano had me hanging on every word, and I could not, I could never put that book down. She weaves such ideas that make me thirst for more, and more, and more. But, alas, this book does have some fatal flaws. For one thing, I find that it really lacks action. I spent the first five chapters just wishing and willing something to happen, but it doesn't. When the action does happen, its two split seconds and then bam, its stop, think about it, and we delve into the emotions surrounding the characters. Well this is all good and all, I think DeStefano needs to work on her ability to keep the story moving at a solid pace. No one likes being a car that's STOP. GO. STOP. GO. Another crack in the picture is the overall ending. I find that after such a hard, intense series full of these incredibly hard to talk about subjects, I grew to really love and care for the characters. I wanted to know whats next. When the opening to the last chapter (or second last?) is "It takes one year..." I wanted to scream. Not once does DeStefano mention what happens within this year, and that makes me upset. The ending seems rushed and I never really had much closure. Often in other books they close the series with a scene between to loved characters in which they summarize what has and will happen. But in this series, the ending was more "Here's what will happen to them. The end." And that's kind of sad. BUT ON THE FLIP SIDE- it does allow for a lot of imagination. I can imagine where the characters are now, and what they are doing. In a way, I love it. I really do. But overall, I think that you should read this series. It is awkward sometimes, and the subjects are, as I said earlier, pretty intense. But this series is truly a piece of artwork, and I love it all the same. Now I'm going to go into specific details about the book. If you haven't read it, please don't view these spoilers. I don't want to ruin it for you. But if you have read it, please feel free to read and comment below. I'd love to discuss it with you! (view spoiler)
