This was my first Shardlake mystery, and it totally made me a fan. His descriptions seemed so real, he added flavor, smells and sights that truly made you appreciate the Tudor times and Tudor York. Fiction or not I found the history fascinating and the mystery plot well paced. In hindsight, as I have read more of Mr. Sansom books, his main character, I interrupt, is deeper, more conflicted and obsessive than his own first person telling first leads you to believe. That is how I explain Mathew Shardlake's actions as opposed to how he, himself narrates his actions. Maybe it is just me reading too much into the plots.

I thought this was really sad but also interesting to learn about how Warren Jeffs changed the lifestyle and came into power...and also how in the beginning their beliefs really weren't that far off from what the Mormon church believes...until Jeffs changed it into a cult rather than just a religious group. And it's so sad the way the women and children are treated. It's hard to understand how anyone can justify that and believe it is really ok.

Excellent book the second time around. I didn't remember much about it since I last read it around 20 years ago. Great story, loved all the backstory Lestat gives for himself and vampires in general.

I decided to read this (series) based on the reviews and high ratings it got around here. That's why it's also part of my Serial Reader Challenge booklist. Well, this just shows how much tastes vary from person to person. Because to me, this book was a huge disappointment. From the rave reviews I was expecting much, much more, instead I got a story that was all over the place, filled with prejudices, slurs and racism, with slow pacing, a horrible female lead (I just couldn't stand the bitch and her mercurial disposition), a male lead that didn't spark anything (and what kind of name is Eidolon anyway?!), and extremely poor chemistry between them. The entire story appeared forced, and though the new and interesting take on the demon lore could've proven quite interesting with the right execution, I just couldn't spare the energy to actually enjoy the tale. I will try the next two books (eventually), hoping this was just a first-book-in-a-series fluke.

Fun book - light enjoyable reading with some good humor and a slight mystery with a twist or two. Entertaining enough that I will read his other mystery.

I like James Rollins. He's not what I usually read and he's refreshing. I did think that the ending was a little weird though. Not what I would have done but that's what makes good literature.
