I picked up this book because I love David Thomson; I bought it because of this line: 'Charlie Chaplin fucked like a very wealthy man with an utterly private life.'

In her second novel, Sally Gardner's unique and creative blend of historical fiction and fantasy, shifts far more towards straight historical fiction (this time set amidst the french revolution), and is unfortunately worse off as a result. Whereas her wondrous debut "I, Corinader" was a tantalising read—at least for the first 80%, i wasn't a fan of the direction it took in the end—"The Red Nacklace" starts well enough, but then becomes tedious and focuses far too much on (what should be) secondary characters, at the expense of developing the protagonists adequately. It is still evident that Gardner is a talented writer with a unique vision and not all her magic is absent as evidenced by a brief spot of unexpected wonderment (chapter 29 OMG) towards the end. I think I'll read reviews of her other books before deciding whether to give them a go.

Definitely gets you thinking. Reminds me a bit of The Gods Must Be Crazy.

After reading this book i learned that our words and actions can really impact someone life, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. Once I began reading this book it was really hard to put it down. We should try to be nicer to people, you never know what they are going through.

Dunno what it means, but I liked the part about The Other.
I quite enjoyed this book, which I chose for its Overdrive availability. It's set in Seattle, at a somewhat indeterminate time (although it begins with a snowstorm that sounds suspiciously like December 2008, and refers to Eddie Vedder as having young kids, which would put it within the past few years or in the near future). Anyway. The book doesn't have anything to do with the band Nirvana. It's about a teenage boy coping with the aftermath of his brother's death -- so yes, he's losing the Nirvana of childhood innocence. Jonathan's a writer and a musician, so there's lots of poetry and music and guitar playing. Some of it is swoony (hey, he's a teenager) and some of it is quite good. Jonathan has several tasks to complete in this book: 1. He's been assigned to convert the remembrances of a dying World War II vet into a book in order to make up his failing grades in school. 2. The principal has also asked him to perform her favorite song by her favorite band, Pinky Toe, at graduation, so he has to learn it and his friends help him set up a blockbuster performance. 3. His mother has him repainting their house so she can turn it into a wedding chapel. Meanwhile, Eddie Vedder keeps coming into it somehow...Jonathan and his brother had connected with Vedder over guitars, and Vedder donated a special guitar to the school after Telly died. You might like this if you know and like Seattle, or if you like poetry and guitars.

I loved everything about this book -- the characters, the story, the dry humor -- I didn't want it to end. I hope there are many more like it to come from this author!

Okay this book is really life changing, okay not the book the concept. I really felt different after reading it. I really don't think Rhonda truly gets it. She is stuck on being rich and living in a big house. But If you apply it with religion, with faith. All I can say is Wow! It just was like a bell going off for me. Saying Hey think positive! Dwell in the now and not the past. Don't let your mind wonder around. I honestly feel better about starting my day because I try to start it with a positive thought.
