Libro raro, por lo aburrido y absorbente a la vez. La personaja principal escribe sus memorias para su amante, éstas empiezan siendo muy simples y conforme avanza la novela, adquieren complejidad. Y lo que cuenta es simple, cuatro amigas, cómo crecen, las diferencias de cada una, y el lento y muchas veces monótono paso del tiempo. Pero hay un tono melancólico sostenido y que va creciendo según la personaja va aprendiendo a escribir y a ser más sutil en sus reflexiones, y uno no puede dejar de estar simultáneamente fastidiado y embobado. De María Luisa Puga se suele preferir su primera novela, Los alcances del rencor, pero a mi me gusta mucho más ésta, porque tiene ese extraño requerimiento de las grandes novelas: que el tiempo transcurre, que estamos acompañando a alguien en su vida, y que nos entusiasme, nos fastidie o nos parezca indiferente, los personajes se vuelven compañeros de ruta

I have listened to this book for the second time. I personally consider it an absolute classic (but then I am also a sucker for concentration camp stories). The main idea is that a person, when stripped away of all other choices in life, still has the ultimate choice of how to respond to his circumstances, whether to let them drag him down or chose his own spiritual stance regardless of circumstances. Very powerful stuff.

Ok, I liked this book, and I hate myself for liking it. Because the whole "they can never be together" gig is kind of...not working for me. Reminds me too much of Romeo and Juliet, and I HATE Romeo and Juliet. Just putting it out there. And the girl, she's all "OMG I hate him!" in the beginning, it was kind of funny ^_^. And then, few scenes later, she's all "WHY CAN'T WE BE TOGETHER????". Really? Like dude, really? And the main guy, Lucas...I don't love him. I like Hector and Jason way way way better. Where are Lucas's flaws? Where???? I don't see nothing, and I hate perfect guys! They're just nauseating. (I sound like such a hater, hah) But the reason why I liked the thing...the writing style was pure awesome. I made my sister stay up at night so I could finish the thing. And I like reading the thing, but the main plot line was kind of...not awesome.

Loved the story of the model warfare and the one about the road trip with the pecan log and the cat. So glad I only have one boy, but as I watched my husband read this, I could totally picture him and his two brothers getting up to some of the stunts in this book. In fact, he could add several chapters of his own! What is it about boys? Hilarious reading.
