Very unusual book. Hard to give it 4 full stars because it is very strange but also very clever. 3.75 would be a more accurate rating from me. Unlike my usual tastes in books, but I enjoy stretching myself from time to time. This was a stretch for me.

If I could relive my childhood I wish I could be one of the Swallows or Amazons. What a joy this novel is!! The summer of 1929 and 2 brothers and their sisters are spending their holidays in the Lake District. They are allowed to camp on an island, sailing the Swallow and living the life of pirates. Their lives are lived decently, honestly - out in the fresh air with milk fresh from the farm to drink and food cooked over an open fire. The story takes place in a time where children were allowed to spend time exploring, trusted that they would make the right choices and not be 'duffers'. They become friends with 2 sisters, the Amazons, and we follow their adventures together as they sail, fish and hunt for pirate treasure. This is such a simple tale in a time of innocence. I want to be with them on the island camp eating seed cake freshly caught perch! A lovely book for both adult and child and one that I highly recommend!
Loved it! Now this is a story--totally different, kinda creepy/spooky but not scary, twists and turns, and just a good old fashioned suspense novel. I really liked it--reminded me of Rebecca--kinda of an old-fashioned thriller. I enjoyed reading it so much, I was sad with every page that I was getting closer to the end--this is one book I wanted to last a long, long time.

Unremarkable story of 8yo Sylvie ('Viou') who lives with grandparents after the wartime death of her doctor father and her mother's absence earning a living in Paris. Sylvie endures many vivid trials, large (seeing her grandfather buried in the family vault) and small (lying about a school grade).
Good fast diversion from cerebral reading.

Philip Pullman brings some very interesting questions as to what free will is. From my first observations after reading this book is he strikes as an atheistic existentialist. He brings some very good points up in his book as to whether or not with God humans can maintain their free will. Where is the choice in Christian theology for instance when I would ask neither to enter heaven or hell, but would rather cease to exist, or float around in the universe. Having a supreme being eliminates these choices and subjects us to determinism.

The best book about comics ever written. Essential reading for anyone interested in the graphic narrative. Also an excellent comic in and of itself. Evidence that comics as essay is genre with great potential.
Loved the way Tim Challies sets up a Biblically healthy view of sexuality. The rest of the book unfolds from there. It is a great reminder of the lies we men are prone to believe. Mainly our selfish attitude that fosters so much disbelief in the freedom we have in Christ to love one woman for the rest of our lives. I enjoyed this book a lot. It was a great reminder of the deliverance I have experienced in the last few years of sexual bondage, and enslavement to pornography. My marriage was nearly destroyed due to a lie! Thanks for reminding us of the truth Time Challies.
