Like The Kitchen House, The Help, and Mudbound~~this book explores the treatment of African Americans...this follows a young thirteen year old June and her relationship with her maid Mary...beautifully written....good read!

** spoiler alert ** angsty and fluffy and incredibly sweet relationship (but not too sweet!) It had it's emotional highs and lows and I could feel myself wanting to get in there and meddle. LOVED the MCs and all the secondary characters. They really felt well-rounded and were part of the whole instead of just stuck into the story. While I was hoping the "make up" part was a little more drawn out, it ended on a teary note...a good note.

I had to read this book for a college biology class. I couldn't put it down! It is a fascinating look about why we choose the mates we choose. Makes me think twice when I go on a date!

Oh man, I'm waiting for this book to come to my library and the wait is killing me!
A chilling account of life in Iran as a woman. The storytelling is brilliant, and we see life in Iran through the eyes of courageous Iranian young women. This book made me think about all the work that women did to win our current rights and status in our society. It also made me ponder the fact that women all over the world share some level of oppression. Iranian women are very brave, and we should honor their courage and not take our rights for granted.

I knew going in this would be a dark and disturbing story due to the subject matter, but I found it too depressing. It wasn't boring by any means but it's not a book I would read again.
The great strength of this novel is how deeply Avi gets readers into the medieval mindset. Crispin's fear of divine retribution for stepping outside his station, his awe at the "immense" cities of 2,000 people, his easy acceptance of the Plague destroying entire villages, even his belief in the divine right of lords/knights to own serfs... it's well done. I couldn't really get into it, though, so it's historical accuracy was a bit overshadowed by my occasional boredom.

Steinbeck's coverage of the country made me want to travel the same path! It was an interesting take on the U.S. in 1960. I'm amazed that I hadn't read it before because I adore Steinbeck! I just wish it were longer.....
