** spoiler alert ** While I enjoyed the book thoroughly, the trifecta of Tom's waffling and self-aggrandizement, Edward's refusal to withdraw his head from his arse, and the book's overall ending - in which Tom, a worthy king despite his faults, was supplanted by Edward, who was neither a better nor a worse king - was severely disappointing. I couldn't put my finger on why The Prince and the Pauper lacked a certain *something*, and then I read this sentence, from a review by user Chris (http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/73... "The beggar-turned-Prince, who I thought the tale would focus about, and would be a truly spectacular character of moral integrity, actually is outshone by the bravado and unshakable persistence of the downtrodden former heir." I am superimposing my twenty-first century American viewpoint on sixteenth century England, but I still wanted to see Tom realise that royalty lies not in blood, but in bearing and how one treats others.

I always forget to do this when I actually finish a book. It was good, but I think I built it up to much while waiting for it.

I have had a mixed relationship with Anne Tyler and, to be honest, I picked this up at the library because I was driving to Portland and needed a book on CD. I ended up really liking it. It is one of those books about basically dull people to whom nothing much happens (my favorite kind). William (known as Liam - I never realized that was a nickname for William!) is 60 years old, ABD in philosophy but has taught 5th grade history in private schools for many years until he is laid off in the school downsizing. He has been married twice and has 3 daughters - one in high school, one married with a young son, one older and single. He is not estranged but also not close to his daughters and his ex-wife. He has few friends and his interests tend to be ones that are solitary like reading philosophy. Liam is basically a nice person, frustratingly nice and undemanding to a flaw. To accommodate his lower income, he moves to a smaller, less expensive apartment. He has few needs and feels contented with having a place to live and clean sheets. The first night in his new apartment he is assaulted by a burglar and ends up in the hospital with a concussion and a bite mark on his hand. He has no memory of the assault at all. Otherwise his memory is fine. Liam becomes mildly obsessed (everything he does is mild) with remembering the assault. He develops a relationship with a younger woman whom he first noticed as a person who seemed to be helping an old man with remembering things. My favorite scene is his visit to his father who left to marry another woman when Liam was quite young. His father's wife decides to tell Liam's fortune - to read his palm. She is distressed by the wound on Liam's hand and says she cannot read the fortune because the scar hides the past and you cannot predict the future without knowing the past. After this, Liam actually begins to gently uncover his past - to see beneath the scars. He remembers things he didn't know he had forgotten. I really liked the tiny changes and slight alterations in Liam's life brought about by his concussion and search for the memory that night. Nothing particularly dramatic, but change nevertheless.

Bunch of British boys get stranded on an island, and while trying to survive and get rescued instead end up killing each other? Sounds like fun :D! As I put above, the premise is interesting. Unfortunately, it just seems to try too hard. The book tries to make a point that humanity, when left with no rules, is an uncivilized savage beast that's no better than any other creature. Especially when said human is a child. I just don't agree with this completely. The main characters are a bit on the bland side, usually just being their standard "good" or "bad" type of character. Morally, there is mild language and the violence that would come with a story like this. There is death and savagery. Good: Symbolism to bible (arguable to whether this is the case and if it's a good thing), interesting premise. Bad: Bland characterization, doesn't expand on the premise, thinks too much of itself, and misguided thesis. If your interested, give it a shot. Otherwise your not missing much.

It seems that every vampire novelization changes the rules of vampirism just a bit to fit their purposes. This series is no different, but here it seems to work. Police officer Sean Canady has to solve the murders of several New Orleans prostitutes that are eerily similar to the killings of Jack the Ripper. Clues lead straight to Maggie Montgomery whose family has been entwined with Sean’s for generations. Is Maggie a murderess or is she being set up? Or is she maybe something else all together? The first book in Drake’s vampire series has a decent plot, and wonderful descriptions of the city of New Orleans, but some mildly irritating main characters. Also a little too much historical information is imparted to characters (and, thereby, the reader) as dialogue, which seems awkward. Although the vampire thing seems a little cliché at this point, it’s still an entertaining novel and one I would recommend to romance readers as well as vampire enthusiasts.

One of those books that I loved in college but I'm reluctant to return to years later--I'm not sure it would stand the test of time.
Learned a lot.

Cassandra Clare managed to surprise me with this one. I'd resolved to read this mainly because I'm a completionist, but I expected another tediously predictable read. About half way through, Clare blew me away by allowing her fun-but-stereotypical-YA-fantasy-heroine to do something that (a) I hadn't anticipated nearly 100 pages before and that (b) represented genuine character development, rather than sudden out-of-character behavior for the sake of the plot. From that point on, her writing managed to draw me far enough into the novel to drown out the voice of the internal critic that had distracted me throughout the first two novels. It helped that the plot stops echoing other stories quite so much, and becomes intriguingly original. I still like Clare's fanfiction better. Pity. But I'll still track down her next book. She's got potential - and despite the Meyer quote on the front cover of this book, at least this series was a million times better than Twilight.
