I like the book so far but I think it could be better.

Its been a while since I read this book, but I've been reading the reviews and I just felt like venting a little bit. I've seen a lot of really good reviews from people saying how they absolutely LOVED this book, and all I have to say about that is: WHAAAT!? First I just want to say that I felt bad giving this book one star because there was a few parts that I did like but I'd say this is just barely two stars, maybe even one and a half. This book was entertaining in a very cheesy and predictable way. It wasn't very hard to predict what was going to happen because it is SOOOO much like other books I have read before. There wee so many things going on i felt like it was all over the place. Its pretty much the EXACT same plot line as Twilight. Some of the situations in the book seemed pretty stupid, for lack of a better word. I didn't really like the characters that much either. Zara seemed very goody goody, she was a little too perfect I think. Her romance with Nick was way cheesy too. Don't get me wrong, I like a good romance and Nick seems like an a-ok hunk to me, but oh my god! Could it be any more corny!? Zara pretty much spends her time swooning over Nick's perfect body, his perfect eyes, his perfect everything ughhhh! baaarf! One of the things I did like was the way the phobias were incorporated int the chapters, it was pretty cool to learn about them. Another thing that I liked was the character of Essie, she was awesome, but other than that this books wasn't all that great. it was kind if a disappointment because the cover was so pretty.

So I was quite snobbish about the Harry Potter thing for a long time - the mass mania seemed to be a harbringer of poor quality - but guilt over a gifted copy and total boredom in 2004 got me started. Quite frankly, the snobbery had been my loss. JK Rowling does an excellent job of creating an entire world. And I think I spent 4 weekends at home ripping through these books. Couldn't even concentrate at work. And oh yeah, I heart Hermione.
Ever since I read this book several years ago it's held a grim fascination for me. I found it painful, confusing, painful, unsettling, painful, and irritating to read. But not finishing it wasn't an option, and I'm almost certain that, in some way, this book is extremely good. I can see that, but I can't recognize how, or really understand it myself. Part of me has been wanting to understand it ever since. Maybe I'll read it again someday.

Fast Food Nation is another book that came insanely highly recommended to me and to which I ended up saying, "Meh." I suppose people thought this book was revolutionary and epiphaniacal because it exposes so many dirty practices about the fast food industry. But there wasn't that much in the book I didn't already know. What there was that was new to me I found quite dry and boring, like an overcooked, undersalted french-fry. I recommend the much snappier Reefer Madness by the same author.
Al little hard to get into in the beginning, but still a good book for classroom use!
I picked up this book expecting it to be another Holes. It wasn't. Small steps is much less lighthearted. I liked the way it dealt with serious issues such as disabilities. My favorite part was the relationship between Armpit and Ginny. The main reason this book only gets 3 stars is because of the ending. It felt too rushed and too neatly tied up. It would have improved the book considerably if Sachar had fleshed out the ending a little more. I did like that the ending wasn't perfect, though. It gave a much more true-to-life flavor than a typical fairytale type of ending, but still carried a hopeful tone. I also would have liked Sachar to discuss the issue of race more fully. He did a good job setting up the race issue and the conflicts it entails, but he didn't seem to go anywhere. I don't think I'll be adding this one to my personal library, but it's still a worthwhile read.

Teenage angst-I liked Dark Shadows when I was a teen. I imagine I would have liked it much more 45 years ago.

I loved the structure of this book, which is of several generations of women sitting and talking about their (sex) lives.
Interesting
