this story broke my heart. bad. the characters are so there and you (i) just keep fighting for them, knowing it's doomed to end badly. heavy, beautiful stuff.

2.5 stars I should start off by saying that I'm a huge fan of Ms. Kagawa's Iron Fey series, so I was very excited to read her next series. Unfortunately, this book just didn't do it for me. I really struggled through the first half, almost wanting to put it down. I'm not really sure why, there was quite a bit of action, but for some reason I just found myself bored and not caring. Fortunately, the second half was much better and I started to get into it a little more. Our main protagonist, Allison, was actually a pretty good character but I'm really not too sure about the love interest. He seemed immature in some ways, acting much younger than Allison. He almost felt a little wimpy in some ways, though the chemistry was decent. He is NO Prince Ash, that's for sure. I will probably read the next one, though I won't be waiting with bated breath....

This sexpose tried to be so edgy, but it was unevenly written and unevenly reported. It would have been a lot better if every teen was not painted as sex-obsessed. I don't think it's realistic. Still, an interesting read if you're interested in boarding school life.

Excellent book! I wasn't looking for a bitter account of one woman's marital struggles, so I was perfectly happy with the rosy light in which she painted her husband. In fact, I thought the way she told her story was fantastic - wacky enough to make for good storytelling but real enough that I didn't feel like it was fabricated.

It isn't often that a book makes me cry. The few that have are those that have heartbreaking conclusions. THE BEGINNING OF AFTER had me sobbing right from the start. And not just one time... Wow. What an intense debut novel. Comparisons have been made between the author and Sarah Dessen and , though I'm a huge fan of Dessen's work, I felt Castle's writing had a slightly different feel... almost like Castle's writing had more emotional depth. Much of this was subtle; one carefully chosen word would make my breath catch and eyes water. I love a book with a good romantic story line, but I'm not sure I'd say that this is a characteristic that clearly identifies this book. The main character does have romantic counterparts, but they aren't a main focus - which makes sense. After all, Laurel has just lost her family... She's got a lot more going on than whether or not a boy likes her. Sure, she still thinks about it, but there are other things that require her attention as well. So, while I usually prefer my novels to have romance, I actually liked the fact that it wasn't a focus in THE BEGINNING OF AFTER... I don't think it would have been fitting at all. I'll be reading subsequent novels by Jennifer Castle... She's definitely a new contemporary YA voice to watch.
I love Dick Van Dyke. He is great commedienne and song and dance man, but an OK writer. While it was interesting to hear about his journey in show business, it was written as matter of fact.

Stay is one of those rare books. You know the ones - you’re not expecting anything amazing, but they sneak up on you and all you want to do once you’re finished is open it back up and read it all over again. I haven’t read a book this powerful in a long time and although this was the first Deb Caletti book I’ve read, it certainly won’t be the last. Clara’s voice was a refreshing one to read, and I loved the tone the author gave to her narration - it wasn’t quite chatty, but not totally formal either; very unique. I also loved the footnotes that randomly popped up throughout the story, they added some humour to a story that definitely had its dark points. I also really loved Clara and her Dad’s relationship. It seemed so real and it was a pleasant surprise to read about a parental figure that was actually part of his daughter’s life. All too often in YA contemporary, parents get pushed to the background of the story, so it so it was lovely to see him included and actually be an imperative part in the story. Deb did a phenomenal job of portraying the abuse Clara suffered at the hands of her ‘soul mate’, Christian. Possession is a hard one to get right, because it’s not an obvious type of abuse, it doesn’t leave marks that you can see. I’ve read a few books dealing with the possession/jealously type of abuse, but in comparison to Stay they fade to the background. It was also interesting to see Clara’s blossoming relationship with Finn, to compare it to her and Christian. It was a necessary addition and honestly, Finn is just too dreamy for me to do justice to. Stay is a book that makes me want to read more contemporary novels. It was an insanely powerful book - I finished it almost a week ago, and I’m still constantly thinking about it. I can already tell this is going to be on my favorites of 2011 list, and honestly it’s going on my ‘favorites of all-time’ shelf too. Read this as soon as you can.

This was a funny book. Freddy is the only student in the class who hasn't lost a tooth. Throughout the whole book, he is determined to lose a tooth.
