Roopa Farooki's "Bitter Sweets" is an intriguing story following three generations of a Bengladeshi/Pakistani family. While Farooki's characters are captivating, unfortunately her plot is twisted to the point of extreme cliché. Despite this book's unbelieveable premise and unending coincidences, somehow the main character, Shona, earned my respect through her quest to expose truth for her deceptive family. Farooki also created an interesting theme that truth and deceit are innate qualities, however, this idea was underdeveloped and overstated. Farooki's writing lacked the eeriness and subtleness the plot deserved.

Es war jetzt nicht unbedingt das beste Buch der Serie, aber immer noch unglaublich gut! Ich mag einfach diesen leichten, flüssigen Schreibstil der Autorin. Diesmal spielt das Buch in der Bretagne und ich muss sagen, dass diesmal der schluss für mich sehr überraschend war! Insgesamt wieder ein tolles und spannendes Buch!

This book was like watching a train wreck in slow motion. Gillies is both a terrible and a great writer. Her charm comes from her clear and distinct voice, her ability to make the reader feel like a friend and confident. What the book lacked was careful and lovely prose. Though she did have one quite lovely passage describing the difference between sadness and anger.

The book Spy Killer by L. Ron Hubbard was an interesting book. This book is a mystery fiction about an American sailor, Kurt Reid, living in Shanghai, China in the late 1930s. He is framed for the murder of the captain of his ship, and forced to go under cover for the Chinese military. While under cover he becomes friends with a very secretive Russian women and an old girlfriend of his. This book has both an internal and external conflict. The internal conflict is this mans choice between two women in his life, and the external conflict is his battle to get his life back. I think this book was written pretty well, the action sequences were especially done well, but everything else was not that great. The Action sequences in books are my favorite parts of books, so overall I really liked it. This book was similar to Sherlock Holmes because it had great mystery and suspense. Sherlock Holmes and Kurt Reid had some differences but they both made great mystery solvers. Each surprise in this book made it very hard to put down. I recommend this book to anyone who likes action and mystery books, and anyone who likes Sherlock Holmes books. I also liked how this book turned out, just because there was a happy and surprising ending. Word Count: 225

It is a bit unfair for me to give this one only 3 stars, as Laura and her daughter Rose never edited this book. Found in Laura's papers after her death, Rose kept the manuscript until her death as well. The book is much shorter and the writing much more stilted, as it is simply a rough draft. I also find this story to be so sad, as Laura and Almanzo struggle so much. It was nice to read more online about how well the rest of her life turned out.
