My God. This book completely ripped my heart out. This is a romance unlike any other, beautiful and raw and achingly tender. A story of war and life and brutal, relentless need. About family, and the unbreakable power of love. The writing took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes. I want to curl up in a ball and sob until the hurt goes away. I want to hug this book to my chest and memorize the passages and the poetry and never, ever forget the way I felt when I turned the last page. I LIVE for books like this. Books that NAIL what life is really about. Books that make you feel grateful for every single breath you take. I'm not even playing, you guys. The character development in this book is unreal - after one book, these characters feel like family to me. The love story will torment you and then make your heart soar; you will want to pull your hair out and then dance around in circles. This book is about life. I don't know if I'm even really expressing what is so wonderful about this book. The writing is just incredible - lyrical and honest. It is heartbreaking and bittersweet. It is a golden summer afternoon and a burning winter chill. War Romance at its absolute best. If you can't tell, I highly recommend this book. Please go read it. You will not regret it.

I'm not really sure why I picked this up. I guess I figured Peter Jackson wouldn't have made a movie out of a boring book. It certainly has an unusual premise: A raped and murdered high school girl tells the story of the aftermath of her death as a ghost in heaven. It takes a while and there is some exploration of the effect on her friends and family, but in the end everything works out okay and heaven is a pretty nice place. So this whole rape and murder thing, no big deal, right? Also there is a creepy scene that is basically a positively presented rape.

** spoiler alert ** Parents need to know that although this is a werewolf story, there's more romance than horror. It's a love story between a boy and a girl; the boy just happens to be a werewolf. The passion between the characters grows throughout the story, and they do have sex once in a tastefully written fade-to-black scene. Compared to other paranormal romances like the Twilight saga, this novel stands out in the genre. The writing is fresh and lyrical, and the characters well-developed and credible. Positive messages The couple works together to solve their challenges and to make their nontraditional relationship work. Positive role models The main characters are appealing and intelligent, and are mostly positive role models. They do have sex, but it's clear that they are very much in love, and they treat each other respectfully. Violence Although one of the protagonists is a werewolf, this story is more about romance than killing. There are occasional discussions of killing and other acts of violence after the fact. The bloodiest scene is a fight between dogs and werewolves in the forest. Sex The main characters, seventeen-year-old Grace and eighteen-year-old Sam, have intercourse (safe sex) in a tasteful, fade-to-black scene near the end of the novel. The encounter is not described in detail. Prior to that, the couple share a bed several times without having sex but do engage in some passionate kissing and caressing. Language "Damn," "hell," "smart-ass," "cocky bastard," and one use of "bitch." Everything is (not) Illuminated You're the one who has to uncover the star that this novel is, it is full of holes but it can somehow stand on its own. It's a MAJESTIC novel, as it's clearly aesthetic. I wouldn't say the content is completed, or at its best; while the writing techniques are totally fabulous. I cannot totally commit with this beautiful string of ideas and butchered words by giving it five stars because for me, it sometimes tries too hard and doesn't get what it clearly wants to get. Still, it is a great work by JSF, highly recommend it.

I'm still deciding about this book. Love the pictures. And I think that I could really like the words ... if only I could get a sense of what they mean. Hopefully I will rate this book higher after my next reread.

I already wrote this review and lost it (SAD DAY!) I'll try and do it again. I really enjoyed this book. I loved how it was always in first person but just switched between characters. Having worked with a boy who had autism, I really identified with this book. There were moments when I laughed so hard I cried because I knew exactly what they felt like. And then there were other moments where I was truly coming to an understanding how much the family had to sacrifice for the boy I tutored. I didn't love the way it ended but I adored the way it was written. Highly Recommend.
