I read it in ninth grade. I think I should read it again, seeing as my knowledge of the period when it was written has changed a lot. I remember it being far too white for me, even in ninth grade.

Interesting ethnography; ethnographer is not able to look beyond peasants as barbarians.

This book is so inspirational. It really opens up hope and gives the reader a better outlook on what has happened and what is to come.

I can't believe this only has three stars - that's like giving giving the foundation of your house three stars. Joy might not be the most exciting cookbook, but I use it almost daily, not only for recipies but just for everything I need to know about food. How should I store beets? How many teaspoons are in a cup? What exactly constitutes "three medium potatoes? I want to thicken my soup, but I'm out of cornstarch. I've got potatoes and leeks and want to make soup, do I need anything else? Every kitchen needs a copy of this book; you might spend more time showing guests the new rec-room than showing off the foundation, but its there and it makes everything else work.
This was such a ride....totally enjoyed it and was just smiling to bits when I finished it and also sad that it had come to an end. My first thought when it finished was where does this leave the war against the lessors. Will continue to recommend this series to anyone that will listen to me. Will need to get back to my life of housework and kids now that I've stopped reading this book. However, I do have the next book and could maybe spend another couple of minutes reading the first chapter.............or so!!!!!

Very controversial book. I'll admit that there were some quite boring parts where I got the feeling that I am reading one of the books for my Philosophy course and I shuffled through pages. However there also were parts where I couldn't put my pencil down for all the wise thoughts author has. It is amazing how a person can transform from a trader to a philosopher. All in all this book made the cogs in my brain turn and think about lot's of stuff that is why I really loved it.
Housekeeping is a book about drifting and restlessness. A family of characters drift into and out of each other's lives, and drift into and around the local landscape of Northern Idaho. The characters are startlingly ghostly, passing through perhaps unnoticed had Robinson not constructed them with such careful detail.

Loved the end to the Joel Gustaffason stories. A fitting conclusion, sad and emotional, a great deal more emotive than the book before When The Snow Fell.
