The first few pages are a little straining, due to the lack of punctuation, but one quickly adapts. Top favorite book of all time. The first book where I finished the last page and immediately went back to page 1 to reread the entire thing again.

Brilliant, thought-provoking, humorous and insightful. Gems include a chapter entitled, "Why I write such good books." His ego is palpable and almost laughable until you realize he's not joking. But that doesn't take away from the fact that it is damn good writing. He doesn't mince words and while it is a daunting piece of work, (nonfiction, politically centered, philosophical) it is not hard to read and invites the reader into the author's brain rather easily. It challenges the reader and holds the audience to a high standard -- you cannot be a passive reader in this. Your mind always has to be active and engaged in the book. It is almost a dialogue with Nietzsche himself. And that's why I liked it.

I wanted to read this because of the glut of recent films that have been derived from graphic novels. It's quite a quick read, for obvious reasons, but very enjoyable. It really punctures the superhero myth that we seen in other comics and especially in the Batman films. In this comic, Batman is basically a facist vigilante who is disgusted by the feebleness of normal justice and governance. He takes it upon himself to decide right and wrong for the citizens of Gotham and if they don't agree with him then they are on the side of the criminals. The comic offers a compelling portrait of extreme megalomania and the dangers that crusades can pose no matter how noble their intentions.

Psychology, philosophy, religion and patricide. Hard work, but ultimately worth the effort. I read the Constance Garnett translation, which has been criticised for being obtuse and Victorian. So perhaps look for the more recently released translation by Richard Pevear and Larrisa Volokohnsky if you're going to tackle this epic 810 page novel. Absolutely brilliant - chilling to the bone - this is one of the best books I have read this year. It was very unsettling and really made me stop and think and even during the day at work I felt almost haunted by this book. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a quick read which will rock your soul!

This was a good look into the life of Muslims in the United States. It was also very positive, talking about the different social contributions the Muslim community is trying to make in the US at this time. I do believe that some of the cultural differences could have been better explained. The author is non-Muslim, so she may not have all of the insights into the community that a Muslim author might have. Though, she is extremely fair handed in how she represents the Muslim community.

Deconstructs the idea of super heroes (and comic books, for that matter). But only if you care...

So dark! So tragic! I just cried and cried; but I found it ultimately hopeful.

Another one of my all-time favorites. Lots of philosophy and theology. Lots of characters with confusing names. Lots of poverty and depravity. Lots of redemption and pages that make you cry. I love, love, love the detective and Sonia. Reading this book is a spiritual experience in itself. And it's set in mother Russia!!!!
Assistant Attorney General Shannon Lynch is usually the cool, level-headed one of the bunch, but this time her heart is getting in the way of her good judgment. She’s got it bad for this politician who may or may not have murdered his wife. Her three best friends, all smart but tough women who also work for the attorney general, think that maybe Shannon’s finally cracked. Is she losing her edge? Will she lose her job? Is she in danger of losing her life? What I liked about this book: it grabs you right from the start, and keeps up a good pace. There were no slow parts here. There were a lot of twists and turns. There were a lot of characters to keep straight, and yet I never felt lost. The author does a really good job of introducing a lot of characters quickly without making it so confusing that you can’t keep up. This is the second book by this author, but I had no trouble keeping up despite not having read the first one. However, I do plan to go back and read it now. I did have a little bit of trouble relating to these women at first – not because they weren’t believable, but just because their experiences and life-styles are so far removed from my quiet life in the country. However, I was intrigued by the realization that most of those differences were superficial. Deep down, they’re just women, and ultimately I was able to connect with that. It's one of those books that got progressively better the more I read - exciting ending!
