Very interesting and unusual portrayal of depression, in novel form. Churchill and his "black dog," are fascinating, and "non" depressing. Recommend.

As a professor of rhetoric, intercultural communication and gender communication as well as a mom, I had strong emotional and intellectual reactions to Amy Chua's "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother". I found myself physically recoiling from the book and yet looking for kernels of wisdom at the same time.

This is a truely incredible book. The main character Pip is very well developed but has so many true characteristics that it is hard not to find at least some point of relevence. It is sometimes a tedious read, as almost all of Dickens books are, but well worth it by the end!

Naturally, I got a lot more out of this classic book as a 47-year old than I did in high school. If you haven't read it since you were a kid, I highly recommend reading it again.
Laney McCain has unabashedly had her sights set on Galen O’Sullivan for years. And though Galen has treated her as nothing more than his best friend’s pesky tag-along sister, Laney dares hope that now is the time he will open his eyes and truly recognize the woman she’s become. But the arrival of Ishmael and Ivy Grubb, squatters on the O’Sullivans’ land, diverts Galen’s attention. Though the Grubbs are crass and uneducated, Galen shows mercy and allows them to stay in exchange for help around the farm. But it becomes a decision he lives to regret…. Sometimes the Journey to Love Is Truly Bittersweet

Talbot Course: Biblical Leadership & Management This is a "standard" for seminaries in So. Cal (probably because they are Fuller guys). It's a good read.

I really enjoy Carrie Vaughn's Kitty Norville series and wanted to like Discord's apple as much as the others. The story had an interesting premise and I really liked certain aspects of the story. Unfortunately, it jumped around too much between the near apocalyptic near future, the mythological past and largely unnecessary vignettes through time of the main character's ancestors. I had a hard time connecting with the main character as a truly sympathetic character, while wanting to know more about some of the more intriguing secondary characters. The jumping around in the story line distracted me just as I was started to feel engaged and caused me to frequently set the book down, which is uncharacteristic of how I usually read her books. Overall, I think that the story would have been better served by allowing more room for the book to breathe and eliminating parts that don't serve to move the story forward.

Entertaining throughout, read like a fairy tale. Neil Gaiman is great at creating and immersing the reader in a new and imaginative world. Heartwarming story.
