It has slaves,mystical powers, prophesy,self destruction,doomed planet,good versus evil,species of slave creatures whose sweat is poisonous and survival.This is a story nightmares are made of and what ifs.It is a science fiction epic. A doomed planet with a species of slave creatures.A dying young woman on Earth. A young man bent on self destruction,destroying his family and his planet.Events are set into motion that cause a catastrophic chain of events. The characters and the storyline are easy to follow and are engaging.If you enjoy science fiction and fantasy at it's best than this is a story for you.This book was received for the purpose of review from the author and details can be found at Sci-fi-cafe and My Book Addiction and More.

I am very impressed with the way McGuire mixes the complexities of developing relationships so seamlessly with the peril and action of October Daye's world. Toby has the familiar, established passion of Connor, a long, lost love who she can have at last, and the piquant possibilities of Tybalt, a familiar face that has taken new and lovely depths in the last few books. From the haunted halls of Toby's knowe to the magical geometry of an undersea kingdom, I was fascinated by the consistently complex and well-drawn world that McGuire has created. While the culmination of all of this action didn't hold any big surprises (and had a few contradictory moments), the last chapter of the book was a beautifully written, bittersweet hug of a moment between the reader and Toby. Every visit to Toby's world is a gift, a glimpse of magic, written in a way that speaks to a human heart, and grief, written with tenderness and a very human touch of resilience and hope, made the ending of this book especially sweet.

I thought this book was good but I am sort of a sucker for fantasy and this was better than a lot of fantasy...but as an actual book I don't think it is great. Not to the level of LOTR but still okay.

This is my first Kevin Brooks book. I found the idea of a vision-viewing gypsy interersting, however this book had far more potential. I felt the authur cold have done more with the visions, which seemed to grow in clarity and intensity throughout the book, yet without depth for the audience. The characters seemed weak and, in parts, unrealistic. Cole for instance is portrayed and cold and unfeeling. However in a sudden role reversal he goes out of his way to take care of Abbie and falls in love with Jess. The last fifty pages of the book consist of never-ending beatings and bloodshed. This book is definitely not for the faint of heart.

Silvie Turner divides the book into qualities of papers, types of papers, uses of paper and an extensive index and appendix. The photographs in the book are well-researched and chosen. This book is out of print, but finding a copy is highly recommended.
