This book reminds me of the letters a family friend used to send: every Christmas, Uncle Harry would regale us with his teenaged daughter's latest pregnancy, his son's pot bust, how the Eugene schools were falling apart despite Harry's best efforts, how his sister was sliding into Alzheimer's, etc., etc. Vlautin executes this roadtrip to nowhere deftly enough; the main tone is Bukowskian without being slavishly so, and Frank's narratives within the story have a Brautiganesque feel. In theory, this should be traveling the same territory as two of my favorites, Jim Jarmusch and Daniel Woodrell, but there is a flatness here that is not actually present in the works of Jarmusch and Woodrell.

I want to like this, but overall it tries to cover too much ground in too few pages. The end result is that everything, save the NPC summaries, comes off as far too superficial. (And what's up with the Templar obsession? Far too many of the plot suggestions boil down to "Group X trying to find lost Templar treasure".)

I'm in trouble with the library for keeping this one out so long. Using past events like Pearl Harbor and McCarthyism to analyze our present crisis, Mueller gives us a picture of where the Bush administration is going wrong and how to fix it. The fact that he is an academic writing recommendations keeps this book from being yet another pundit's exercise in masturbatory ranting.

Great start book, love the description of the wedding. Yet slightly predictable. Middle book took me a while to get through, though very interesting. Last book is long and slow but the last 80 pages whiz past

Mulan is not like most other girls in ancient China. She has grown up without a mother, and rather than spend her days doing ladylike tasks and dreaming of marriage, she has learned to fight using a sword and bow. Her father is somewhat distant and doesn't like to speak of his late wife, and Mulan often wonders if she is a disappointment to him. When the Emperor forms an army to fight the Huns, every household must send one male to fight. Mulan's aging father has recently remarried, and Mulan remembers well that her own mother died giving birth while her father was away at war. Fearing for her father's safety and not wanting her stepmother to go through what her mother did, Mulan decides to disguise herself as a boy and go in her father's place. She becomes close to Prince Jian, the commander of her unit, but telling him that she is really a girl, and her feelings are deeper than friendship, could lead to disaster. This was an overall enjoyable book from the Once Upon a Time series. I liked that it had a very unusual setting compared to other books in the series, and the story isn't one that has been retold many times. Although this book wasn't among my top favorites, it was a solid, enjoyable read that should appeal to readers who enjoyed other books in this series.

I'd first heard about this via Warburton's Philosophy Bites. Its a well written and concise book exploring some recent attempts at answering what art actually IS. I felt mildly disappointed that the book didn't give me a definitive answer, but actually Warburton does a very good job of explaining why it's probably an impossible question in the first place.

My absolute favourite Dickens novel. It's a very long read but the story is so beautifully written that it's worth it. A coming of age narrative told from the first person perspective, it traces the protagonist's movement towards a deeper understanding of self. I also thought that Dickens does an excellent job of injecting humour into the most mundane passages. I enjoyed it so much that I'm planning on re-reading it, if only for the writing.
