This was borrowed from the public library. Adult historical fiction. This is historical fiction at its very best. Excellent writing. Civil War, the Union Underground in Richmond, Virginia. Eliza VanLew was a Union spy. I have been to Richmond, but only to the capitol building and a stuffy museum full of southern history :) This book was great!

A fun collection of a great comic! I've always loved Bloom County, and I picked up this volume as a whim and a treat for myself. I look forward to getting ahold of some of the earlier comics, but this will happily hold me over til then.
Don't let the cover fool you, this book doesn't take place in the 1980s as you might expect, but instead takes place in turn of the century England. The storyline follows a pretty classic romance novel storyline: boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl separate, girl moves on, boy returns, girl feels torn between safe new love and exciting old love. We all know what happens at the end of these books, but just in case you don't know, I won't spoil it for you here, but you'll learn after you get a few dozen romance novels under your belt. Like I said, we all know what will happen at the end of romances, but that isn't really the point, romances are all about he journey and the characters. The journey and the characters in Wedding of the Season aren't half bad. The two love interests are a little whitebread (the book needed a good villain, or something to spice it up a bit) but still good semi-interesting people you can root for. The setting of coastal England was gorgeous... To read the full review over at The Book Buff, click here: http://thebookbuff.blogspot.com/2011/... -Kate the Book Buff

This was kind of a fun book. I loved the character of August. I felt like the book was trying to put down some universal truths and didn't quite accomplish what it wanted to, but it was fun. I felt bad for T. Ray.
not nearly as good as her other stuff. for a completist only, methinks. but not terrible either. just meh.

I enjoyed Dark Places. The story of Ben a fifteen year old found guilty of murdering his Mother and sisters, and his sister, Libby, the only survivor who searches for the truth is well crafted. The story circles around the original event, the participants and victims and the search for the people in the present who might shed light on Ben's guilt or innocence. The book kept me guessing and wondering until the very end.
It was ok. I enjoyed that it was set in Minnesota and I will probably read the next one. I do hope they get a little better though; it seemed a bit too long for my taste.

I know a lot of people who have great taste in books loved this, but I really, actively disliked it. What can I say? Maybe it's because I had the Griffin and Sabine books burned in my brain as a teen and this was along the same lines but not nearly as creative and interesting as those? I know I'm in the minority, but both my younger sisters had the same vehement reaction. The first half was interesting, well written, and engaging enough to pull me along, but the ending actually made me throw the book. Well, at least it got a strong reaction!
This novel gets off to a great start and the questions it explores - -how best to preserve the native flora and fauna of California's Channel Islands -- are interesting and complicated. But the characters gradually devolve into stereotypes and the novel becomes too melodramatic.
