I must admit I am envious of Bryson. He's living the life I wish I could live. Hiking across the British Isle. Damn. Sign me up. Loved this book because he really got out in the country and gave the reader a sense of what England is truly about. I hope to visit the UK sometime. Hope I can have a similar experience.

I don't recommend this book at all. It has a clever title, but is basically whiny and unsubtle. The language is very dated and in a few years it will be archaic.

This book is a memoir that tells of the unbelievable sacrifices of one group of American paratroopers in Easy Company as they fought to liberate Europe from the Nazis. The book chronicles their training and eventually the D-Day invasion, as told by their commanding officer, Major Dick Winters. Although few of them would consider themselves to be heroes, they are in my book. The conditions they suffered through were brutal. It is sad that there were so many times when the soldiers didn't have the warm clothing, weapons, ammo, or food that they needed, and yet they persevered and claimed victory. Warfare has certainly changed. WWII is a stark contrast to the high-tech wars that are waged today. I'm so thankful the Allies were victorious against Germany and Japan, liberating so many people and preserving our freedom. God bless them all, those brave men and women that fought in WWII, and those that have fought since, and are continuing to fight today against tyranny and terror.
