Violent, but beautiful. How can that be?

Beautiful edition of a story I should have read when I was a kid and didn't. The world he created is incredible!

Laine is befriended by the beautiful and popular Leah. Over the years leah torments her, leaving her confused and manipulated. But Leah has her own torments and demons and her life spirals until she is killed in a car accident. But the lesosns Leah taught laine will be with her forever. Each chapter is a "lesson" Laine learns from Leah's treatment of her and their relationship over the years. Leah is victimizer and victim both. And the emotions between the two very vivid. I found it very intense and was happy with the "true" friends Laine was able to meet.

A really fantastic coming of age story. The main character is struggling through her turbulent middle school years, which sounds cliche, but I promise that it is not. Alice Winston is desperately trying to find herself in a family where depression, financial struggle and her sister's winning personality and surprising departure from town have overshadowed her as a person. It's a great story about struggling to find yourself when everything around you is out of your control. Parts of it are poignant and incredibly sad because of her clear lack of social conections, made cringe-worthy because of her intelligence. I think it is relatable on a lot of levels (not sure what that says about me...Alice tells a lot of lies, but I think most girls her age do that or everyone has gone through a phase where that seems like a good idea. If you're lucky you grow out of it, and I certainly have.) Was a bit sorry to have it come to an end and made my way through it pretty rapidly. The characters were well developed and you're almost left with the feeling that they are out there somewhere, carrying on their personal histories.
Captain Holly Short is believed to be a murderer, Artemis and Butler (still mind-wiped) are in danger of being killed and Mulch Diggums is the only one capable of helping them all survive. Can that be right? Kind of, but Mulch would appreciate my synopsis. Opal Koboi is back and looking for revenge. Another great book in the Artemis Fowl series. The book is a little bit darker and serious than the previous. There is a death and a lot more violence in this one but the drama is balanced with a lot of the usual humor and fun of the three books before it.

As a mother of three daughters I loved this book. There is no time like the present to be talking to your daughter (or son). And write letter to them! This book was written by a man but in the voice of a woman - a mother. Outstanding.
** spoiler alert ** I half listened, half read this book. The audio book was given to my by a friend for Christmas a few years ago. I actually read it not to long after I received it. I loved the narator of the story, but by the time I got about halfway through I had to know what happened and the narrator wasn't reading fast enough for me. So I switched to the paper back. But she was very good at reading the story and conveying the emotions of all the different characters. This story broke my heart and I loved it for that. I am not really giving anything too much away, but there is a twist at the end that I didn't see coming. But by the title, I didn't know what it meant until the very end. That being said, do I think that the results made up for the original betrayal? Not by any means. But a dying sister's last attempt to make up for her unforgivable betrayal was still one of the most heartfelt things I have read. I can't imagine living with a mistake of her magnitude. But at the same time, it's something that any one could have done. And the fact that the victim ends up with the abuser and then realizes it sometime down the road made me very upset. She was willing to stay with her abuser though because he kept her with a comfortable lifestyle. This book is deffinitely something that I think everyone should read. I can imagine it will be required reading - if it isn't already - for high school kids everywhere.
